Pale Moon 26 (Goanna) beta1 feedback thread

Post by Moonchild » 2015-08-06, 10:27

This thread is reserved for feedback given on the public beta 1 of Pale Moon 26.

Before you post a new issue, please:
  • Check if someone else has already reported it in this thread. Duplicate reports will serve no purpose, and only make keeping things organized harder. Duplicate reports may be removed by moderators.
  • Check if the issue found is specific to this beta! If the problem can be reproduced on the current 25.6 version of Pale Moon as well, then your report does not belong in this thread.
  • Check your blood pressure. If it is too high, please take half an hour to relax and then re-evaluate your need for posting ;)
If you want to discuss specific issues found, you can also do that in this thread, but please make your posts count. Take your time to write more than a single sentence (or 2) and kindly keep "me too" posts out of this thread. Thanks in advance.

Bug report: on facebook the comment box does not grow dynamically. Instead of the original resizing box I get an ugly scrollbar...but it does work anyway. And can't resize the box manually either.

Thanks for your report -- this, too, is likely a useragent sniffing issue. We've already had to make special amends for FaceBook; likely it needs more.

EDIT: Our release-version override for FaceBook did not make it into the beta, so you're seeing the known issue of FaceBook not supporting Pale Moon useragents, period. They have already been asked (many times in the past) to kindly recognize Pale Moon and choose the appropriate set of features for it, but without response so far.

No stability concern as of yet. Google works fine aside User Agent sniffing, as it did in 25.x. I can confirm that much. The regression at the moment is YouTube. The HTML5 video player is suffering some limitations, mainly being it cannot access a full screen mode. On the same note, analytics give me an error as well. "Your browser does not support charts".
Tested under x64 26.0 with FF Compatibility Mode enabled.

As someone who does random web development, I wonder if there is a good list of differences between Gecko and Goanna. A couple of my projects might need improvements.

@11ryanc: this falls under the Google category. Youtube=Google, and they will suffer from the same "I don't recognize this UA" issue. Maybe it needs special mention under the "Google Services" on the WIP page :P
This has already been confirmed as a UA sniffing issue (Specifically them checking for Gecko/* in the UA) in the pre-publish beta cycle.

@tuxman: Unfortunately there isn't a list, but if you stick to normal practices for web development (like using @supports, etc. instead of product-specific checking) you likely won't need to change a thing.

Some of my used frameworks don't, but I could live with submitting pull requests... :)

I'm aware. By Google, I mean Google Search. YouTube is more affected than other Google services at this time. Appears Maps don't seem to be getting along either, with FF Compat Mode that is. I personally liked Google with basic HTML though tbh.
Wow. They really check as far down as the Gecko information in the UA?

Yes they do.

From our internal testing:
Yes, indeed, it looks like they're checking for "Gecko." Simply replacing "Gecko" with "Goanna" results in no full screen function on YouTube's HTML5 player. Adding "(like Gecko)" to the end of the "Goanna" UA restores the full screen function. Various "rv:" numbers seemed to make no difference as long as I also did not drop the "Firefox/" number - when I dropped the "Firefox/" number to a corresponding value of 26 or less, YouTube responded with the following notice: "You're using an older version of Mozilla Firefox that we'll soon stop supporting. Please update your browser to the latest version."

Toggling Firefox compatibility mode on/off appeared to make no difference with any of these changes.

It might be best to introduce something like "Goanna/xxxx; like Gecko/20100101" in the UA string ;)
Posting through the Windows x86_64 beta, and apart from some problems arising from UA sniffing, I've not faced any problems.

Will you be landing JPEG-XR support in 26.0 release or is it slated for some other release?

I got a reply with some delay from MS OpenTech (they've likely been swamped with Win10 development) and I plan to have both WebP and JPEG-XR in the final version 26.0 - giving equal opportunity to both formats.

Check help -> troubleshooting information. It's listed there.

Hey there, um, I'm having trouble getting my bookmarks to copy over to Pale Moon v26.0, now I don't know if this is the way it's supposed to be. But I usually copy them by bookmarks> import and backup> restore> choose file and desktop or whatever place I save it to. Oh, there seem to be a problem when you install add-ons on AMO, it doesn't have the pop-up saying "Pale Moon prevented you from downloading/installing an add-on on this website (addons.mozilla.org)." And yes I have the option enabled to "warn me when sites try to install an add-on."

Other then that it's doing well, eh bit lagy, but good. :)

Another problem I mite add to the Facebook column, is that I can no longer see the chat/find friend section, literately it disappeared!! And yes I have disabled any add-ons that mite have something to with it missing, but no luck there.

Any confirmation and a reply back is greatly appreciated! :)

I've been on Twitter for most of tonight and have not experienced any lag whatsoever with the 26 beta.

(Don't have a Facebook account, so sorry can't help with that one.)

I started a topic regarding Typing on the Direct Messaging, try that. You don't even have to send the message, just pretend that you are starting one.

For facebook, try making a new preference (string), and set it as follows:
Name:

Code: Select all

general.useragent.override.facebook.com
Value:

Code: Select all

Opera/9.80 (Pale Moon)

Hi Folks,

the Extension "FlashGot" doesn´t work with Version 26.
The installation and configuration works fine but the Addon doesn´t catch the Downloads and tranfser it to the internal Download Manager.

Many Greetings
