Homepage hijacking.

Post by TheTD80 » 2015-06-21, 19:28

Hi.
I got a problem with palemoon and MSN. My internet connection is an USB modem + 3G and every once in a while when I plug it in it automatically opens a new tab with MSN.dk  (Denmark, where I am) and this shouldn't happen. Somehow msn microsoft found a way to open their horrible website automatically as a new tab. In my options I set my homepage as duckduckgo.com and I never had MSN as my homepage. I cannot see or find any setting that makes this happen. It's like a virus. I think they do this to insert a tracking cookie.
Can anyone help me with this problem?

This isn't a bug with Pale Moon, I'll be moving this topic to a better location.

Most likely the driver/access software of your modem tells your OS to open msn.dk (which will open a new tab in Pale Moon when it's the default handler for internet addresses). This is behavior that lies outside of Pale Moon and the browser just does as instructed by the third party software: "open an internet address".
You should check your settings in whatever software came with your modem. If this can't be configured, you should complain to whomever provides you with the modem and subscription.

Ok. Thanks for the reply. In that case never buy huawei usb-modems. Just close the topic cause there are no options in the modem settings that can fix this and I think the chinese don't care about fixing this.

I've used a Huawei dongle myself. This isn't a problem with the actual modem in that case, but extremely likely the software as supplied by your ISP in Denmark that does this.

Maybe you could re-route it by modifying your HOSTS file?

You could comment out or change the <homepage> tag in C:\Program Files (x86)\Huawei Access Manager\plugins\XFramePlugin\config.xml, but this is for an old modem that I own and it might not translate to newer versions.

I found a way to block the website. In Avast web protection settings, there is a site blocking setting and I just added msn url. Now I don't have to worry about it.

Indeed. My provider's dongle is a Huawei, too. They block Google Earth, but nothing else.

My former provider had a forced data volume reduction by reprocessing JPEG images.
