UnloadTab previously working, now broken?

Post by DAOWAce » 2015-04-08, 11:24

UnloadTab isn't compatible with Pale Moon, so it says, and so Moonchild says, although not explaining why.

I just finally got done with my Firefox -> PM transition after getting so annoyed that it wasn't working on the Steam community sub-site. Been using PM portable for the last.. 2 years or so as a sub browser; opened when I quickly needed to do things. Re-read the page for it and decided to use the installed version and did a full profile transfer over.

After using the browser for a few hours I noticed unloading tabs wasn't working right; it wouldn't actually load the currently active tab if you tried to unload it, nor would it switch tabs properly.

Funny thing is, my portable version of PM had UnloadTab working without issue.

The versions were different (2.47 vs 2.46.1), so I installed the one from my portable version, but nothing changed. I tried messing around, disabling a bunch of other addons, mirroring the setup between them, but nothing got it working. I eventually just swapped over the profile folder to the portable version to see if that worked.. even that didn't. I then thought maybe it was my giant amount of tabs I had opened, so I just spam opened 200 new tabs and played around.. still worked just fine.

So now I've come to make this thread and ask if anyone knows what the heck is going on. Both PM versions are exactly the same. Old prefs file copied over with the old addon was met with no change. I cannot fathom why it's working on one but not the other.

I can't quite live without this addon. I searched around and found BarTab Heavy, but it doesn't have identical functionality (missing hotkeys for instance) and old URLs unloaded with custom text in the address bar don't load the text afterward, which is a huge issue as I save things relevant to the tab in the address bar. I might have to go back to Firefox again until this is sorted out; didn't expect an addon I was using in my spare PM to suddenly break when I finally switched fully over to PM.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... /versions/

Latest compatible version is: Version 0.24.5

Please install that version :)

No good.. nothing changed.

Tried starting the browser with a fresh prefs.js, boy that was a mistake. Just lost my session since my last backup ~28 hours ago along with the UI going back to default.

Interestingly, the addon worked as it was supposed to.

After reloading my session (with session manager), and restarting the browser numerous times, it ceased working. I closed every tab and reloaded the browser to see if one of my tabs was somehow affecting it, but no change, still broken.

Edit: Re-tested, it breaks immediately upon loading my backed up session; my fresh backup I made just before testing again. prefs.js is nearly identical between the two profiles (just time based things are different), so it's definitely not a config issue.

I am absolutely clueless as to what is possibly wrong with this.

Edit2: Interestingly, I discovered that it unloads current tabs properly if I set the option to either 'firefox default' or 'load previously selected tab', however the latter option doesn't work correctly and functions identical to the first, which just loads the tab to the right irrespective of its loaded state. While this is better than not unloading the current tab at all, it still isn't a viable solution.

I don't know what could possibly have corrupted my current session. I have around 150 tabs open; yet as I said even closing all of them, opening a fresh tab, restarting, etc., nothing fixes it; I have to reset the browser to get it working again.. after that I'd have to manually load every site one by one. That is just insane, and I'd lose my place/time stamps in all of them.

Firefox continues to work just fine even with the same session, so something's broken it in the transition to PM.

Edit3: I've been trying to trim down my session file. Learned it actually keeps all the history of every opened link in that tab. I keep a lot of sites open that I've tabbed back and forth between things from (Gmail for instance), so there were massive backlogs of links in the file, including referral references. Opening a new tab with the current page clears it, but some things I still need that history for.

I also learned it keeps the previously closed tab/window list in the file; session manager clears that up just fine.

Unfortunately, even after trimming down the file by 70% and closing about ~50 tabs, it still isn't working properly. If I have to reset my entire session, it will only be done as a last resort.

You can use the method of saving all tabs as a bookmarks list with one click, removing your session, then restoring the tabs with "open all in tabs". You will not retain the paging history in those tabs as a result, but that is inherent to the issue of using transitional elements like tabs as a semi-permanent storage that it wasn't originally designed for.
