Google images (again)

Post by Paul D » 2014-10-12, 21:28

The drag and drop feature in Google Image Search does not work in Pale Moon v25. This is a feature that I use often, and it is very important to me.

I tried to post this problem before. My post was disapproved and I do not understand why. I thought I was doing the right thing by reporting an apparent bug.
The reported message does not fit into any other category, please use the further information field.

Please post Google problems in appropriate existing threads.
I can find no "appropriate existing threads" since this would appear to be a problem with Pale Moon v25, not with Google.

At the very least, a comprehensible reason for disapproval would be appreciated. I have to say I am not particularly impressed by your rather curt dismissal of a new member's second post.

Nearly all problems with google are related to google's practice of User Agent sniffing : depending on what it sees in it, it behaves differently (the general rule being that outside of the 3/4 big browsers, it screws you)
See other threads for more detail and possible workaround (and only if the workarounds don't work, then it may be a Pale Moon issue)

And I shall repeat. Since Google Image Search works perfectly in v24 and doesn't in v25 it is only logical to assume that the problem is a Pale Moon problem. After all, Pale Moon IS basically Firefox, and Google Image Search also works in the current Firefox.

As a new member, I have no idea how to find these "other threads" that everyone wants me to look at. I have used the forum search and found nothing remotely related to this problem. Hell, I don't even know what User Agent Sniffing means.

After all, Pale Moon IS basically Firefox,
Starting with version 25, this is simply NOT true anymore. That's why all these issues (which Moonchild & Tobin are hard at work on fixing) are appearing.

IF it is a User Agent Sniffing issue (it sounds like it is, but I'm no expert), the steps you need to fix this are here: http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php ... 948#p37975

Just make sure in step #3 change outlook.com to google.com

Thanks for a finally comprehensible post, which I shall try to implement overnight. I'll keep you posted.

What about step 7?

What about step 7?
reload google images?
How far are you prepared to go? How much are you prepared to risk? How many people are you prepared to sacrifice for victory?
Are you willing to die friendless, alone, deserted by everyone? Because that's what may be required of you in the war that is to come.

Well, that didn't work, so I'm back to v24 again.

Google image search does not work in v.25 because in this version search?tbs=sbi command gets "corrupted" becoming webhp?tbs=sbi
For example, if one sends request like

Code: Select all

https://www.google.com/search?tbs=sbi:AMhZZitIQttAGMcpqyVpKUBjDhUo6MErxzMTiicglh9wwHOFYOr0_1xdWSRXvzIq7cOwY6E9irKI-6u8CEf18DoDILZZDH478Q1QJmOsSYV2LqKiTVSIbWMhX1OJt7s9HdkRcS3t-uRZiCgTKZhnGtgDjHRiG0rlxd_1tavbTcEHQg6w8ki7BDqdAMFQIwK_1RAXVwCNkLHdSMv5SrrYLj_1-Qtr7wuF7QQ-R4x87O867VHXptHiw-yWBCl1CrBPIrrz3MO5a6g5gF_1a7PODXVGR3YeEfu2MBbi68QWK6ZMzR0_11oQom5IRk2iGno7esrjriPpluILsgM-tg23XWGB0ZmKXQ97r7z5yYw4RCyMAAbd-HoK8rorwiQylWGPrL6-L8C4gOunWGdJNMRia5K91LLj72LWrF1NmhAwQ6k_1iCZDsTjPBy_1RAt605FlA1fYfYUChnMlH7cHme9JZtB9ybsKmJ1t258ezDmF9SaHCTmFRrsyjhHNHBt4AHA5Ka8F36rs3_1uwEg-GvYQHDSZoW8VnLS6DjyV3pUrZTBTzTIwHFFcDaO1V8w3A0243Kxgu6igDFmBQpKxsywrcWetpI2EfplNmFuVnEiULrsJU0v-xrIT331Dwhu6K9fiLHloIW2wYePjhPDY6yQJ_1WwEDOs6bc9WRVozDB4DY7yDqORRMPimaIbUl2YNV8aKZ8xL4rRlVC1bKOB-Aso2314xQZt7wuFqYZ7mM81RXO9wb6iapzjI-MIyMgujk0Mqwg4Gr2KaZ30my1hnQ5Q7qewP6wgL_1brXkIhxY-Xk4w&gws_rd=ssl
the browser opens

Code: Select all

https://www.google.com/webhp?tbs=sbi:AMhZZitIQttAGMcpqyVpKUBjDhUo6MErxzMTiicglh9wwHOFYOr0_1xdWSRXvzIq7cOwY6E9irKI-6u8CEf18DoDILZZDH478Q1QJmOsSYV2LqKiTVSIbWMhX1OJt7s9HdkRcS3t-uRZiCgTKZhnGtgDjHRiG0rlxd_1tavbTcEHQg6w8ki7BDqdAMFQIwK_1RAXVwCNkLHdSMv5SrrYLj_1-Qtr7wuF7QQ-R4x87O867VHXptHiw-yWBCl1CrBPIrrz3MO5a6g5gF_1a7PODXVGR3YeEfu2MBbi68QWK6ZMzR0_11oQom5IRk2iGno7esrjriPpluILsgM-tg23XWGB0ZmKXQ97r7z5yYw4RCyMAAbd-HoK8rorwiQylWGPrL6-L8C4gOunWGdJNMRia5K91LLj72LWrF1NmhAwQ6k_1iCZDsTjPBy_1RAt605FlA1fYfYUChnMlH7cHme9JZtB9ybsKmJ1t258ezDmF9SaHCTmFRrsyjhHNHBt4AHA5Ka8F36rs3_1uwEg-GvYQHDSZoW8VnLS6DjyV3pUrZTBTzTIwHFFcDaO1V8w3A0243Kxgu6igDFmBQpKxsywrcWetpI2EfplNmFuVnEiULrsJU0v-xrIT331Dwhu6K9fiLHloIW2wYePjhPDY6yQJ_1WwEDOs6bc9WRVozDB4DY7yDqORRMPimaIbUl2YNV8aKZ8xL4rRlVC1bKOB-Aso2314xQZt7wuFqYZ7mM81RXO9wb6iapzjI-MIyMgujk0Mqwg4Gr2KaZ30my1hnQ5Q7qewP6wgL_1brXkIhxY-Xk4w&gws_rd=ssl
instead.
In previous (v.24) version and in other browsers (IE and Chrome) search?tbs=sbi remains unchanged and request works.

For what it's worth, I encountered the "Drag & Drop" not working problem tonight, and initially searched Google related posts. Others reported the same problem this week, but when their forum claimed it was fixed and I still could not use the facility, I started experimenting, and found that it was fine with IE 9. I then began looking here, and when I found this post suddenly thought to try "User Agent Switcher" (which ISN'T broken!) and as soon as I selected "Firefox 25" the normal functionality returned. I have also attempted to add a custom "user agent override" in about:config, but cannot get it accept a new string. I copy/paste "general.useragent.override.google.com" into "New String Value" and hit OK, but it just vanishes, so I can't then add the values as suggested by Matt Tobin here: http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php ... 948#p37975 Am I doing something wrong?

I had another go with the custom user agent string, and (eventually) realised that you have to enter the name, then the value in the same box, one after the other. I made a new string for google.com and that didn't help, but a second one for google.co.uk did the trick. I used the value as per Matts post I linked to above. Hope that helps someone.
