Substack comment sections crash Pale Moon

Post by Scavengre » 2024-11-20, 18:54

Try reading their comment sections a few levels deep - not just once - and it'll crash the browser.

Works fine for me for nested levels, the only thing broken on Substack is the like button for comments. Post your troubleshooting info inside code tags (5th button from left in the post editor, that looks like </>)

Re: Substack comment sections crash Pale Moon

Troubleshooting info:

Code: Select all

OS Windows 7 SP1 (64 bit, Yes, I know it's antiquated)
Pale Moon ver. 33.4.1 (64-bit)

Add-ins are AdBlock Latitude 5.0.9
Dismiss The Overlay 1.0.7 (rarely seems to do much)
FastDial & Speed Dial 5.0.0 (should do nothing here!)
nMatrix 5.1.0 (most of Substack is permitted)
Other interesting details: It works for the first few pages - most of the time. Sometimes it locks up on the home page. When it locks up, it sends one core to 100%, and slowly steps up memory use (say 10MB/second) until memory's full, then just bounces off the limit for awhile. The Internet connection is geosynchronous satellite, so has truly miserable ping times (600ms at BEST). Sometimes it looks like it's not responding for a few seconds, then starts responding again. Other times just locks up and stays locked up (I've once waited for over an hour).

Hope all this helps, S.

Troubleshooting information - open about:support in a new tab, click the 'copy text to clipboard' button and paste that within code tags.

You might try to update those graphics drivers. The NVIDIA chip you have has a driver from late 2019 that should work for you. The Intel one, I dunno, but it's also pretty old and it is the one you're currently using for some reason.

After viewing the trouble shooting information, the OP is also using the NoScript extension. This extension does cause problems with Pale Moon even if has been installed and then uninstalled.

Moonchild will not help people when they have problems with Pale Moon if they have NoScript installed. This is the short of it.

Indeed several likely causes.
Old graphics drivers, especially Intel ones, can cause crashes. Even moreso in dual-GPU systems. I'm pretty sure there are newer drivers for both available.
NoScript is known to cause crashes too, even if disabled. We cannot provide support unless you at the very least do the following to try and remedy this:
  1. Complete remove NoScript from the browser (uninstall the add-on)
  2. Remove persistent script data:
    1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Del
    2. Select time range "Everything"
    3. Expand "Details"
    4. Check (only!): Cookies, cache, offline website data, and site connectivity data
Leave other items unchecked (unless you want to clear those too)
    5. Press "Clear now"
  3. Restart the browser

Urf. Thanks much for your commentary. I shall have a go at implementing your suggestions and get back to you (if I can) with my results.

I do not think I have a dual GPU problem - it's a Lenovo Thinkpad that spends 99% of its time in a docking station (and then there's three monitors - but only one GPU, I thinks. Updating the graphics drivers is yet another interesting problem. S.

So far so good. I did 'remove' the NoScript (was disabled - now it's gone completely) and that seemed to improve things, but it was always only occasional - hasn't happened since, but that doesn't mean the problem's gone away. The extension, however, does seem to have gone away... ;-)

I cleared up a bunch of stuff, but I left checked 'active logins' because I really didn't want to have to login to all those places again. Could if I had to, but it's a pain in the keester.

If the big dog tells me to remove NoScript, it's gone. :)

Urk. Yeah, it failed again. To be fair, I was deliberately banging on it trying to make it fail - but it shouldn't have, and it did. More clearances yet to come, I guess.

Thanks again for your help - I like Pale Moon, and part of the reason why is because people help with it. Thanks. S.

(PS - Still doesn't seem to have helped with the DeviantArt login pages). S.

I'm afraid version 33.5 is even worse. I've had crashes just viewing home pages again - had that many versions ago, but I thought it had been fixed. S.
