Slow Browsing Experience

Unread post by burgary » 2024-08-07, 23:01

Hello! I'm new to pale moon, found it when I was looking for an old-style browser, and I love the way it looks and feels already! My only issue is that it's a bit slow with many tabs open. I have the setting to only load tabs when clicked, but it's still a bit slow. I'd like to know if there's anything I can do/modify/change to speed it up a bit? I have a high-end PC, so I doubt that's the cause.

Operating system: Windows 10 Pro (freshly installed and de-bloated)
Browser version: 33.2.1
32-bit or 64-bit browser?: 64bit

You'll have to be a bit more specific about what you mean when you say "many tabs". We have people here who open 3,000 tabs and just leave them open forever, and think nothing of it.

Use https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/suspender/
Most especially if you have many many tabs open.

About 30 youtube tabs, as I cant add them to queue from notifications.

I think this might have helped a bit, thank you! I'm still very much open to more suggestions too.

Welcome!

In my experience, if you have a capable computer, slowness in Pale Moon is less to do with the number of open tabs, and more closely related to what web pages you like to use.

There are some sites which lag terribly on Pale Moon, or which consume a high proportion of processing, even when they are not the current tab. It's just the way it is, although trying the AVX2 version (currently in the Contributed 3rd Party Builds part of the forum) is worth a try.

So while you may be able to do some tweaking, it is highly likely that with some combinations of websites (it really depends so much on what you visit) Pale Moon can still feel slow, and there is not a whole lot you can do about it.

Since you're using YouTube in Pale Moon you can also try Project VORAPIS's userscript in Greasemonkey which brings back the lightweight classic UI. I used to just put YouTube in another browser since its "modern" UI just lags so hard and I still wanted to put likes and comments in videos which wouldn't be possible in Invidious. But now I can just install VORAPIS and put YT back in Pale Moon again

Thank you for the suggestions, both have helped!

I have one more question though; I love the default theme but I was wondering if there was an identical version but dark mode, that isn't on the themes page. I tried looking myself, but couldn't find one.

Hmm yeah, a complete theme that is just the Default but dark would be pretty convenient indeed... You can try building a simple lightweight theme aka persona with the Theme Builder extension and then set the background to something dark like #151515 (or straight up black as in #000000) and then the foreground text as #FFFFCB (which is a very very slight yellow instead of pure white so it can be easier to your eyes at night). That doesn't require a restart so you can switch back and forth between the Default and the persona you created easily. Combine that with an extension like Swarth and you should be able to get a pretty decent dark mode setup I think.
