broken extensions in PM19x64? maybe?

Post by loliwut » 2013-03-01, 14:40

Hi. Well, I was going to make a post about some nagging issues with this particular build of PM, but I just restarted the browser one more time (it was like the 10th time? nfi why it decided to actually do something this time). All of my original gripes were resolved after this restart, except personas still won't apply new themes, which is a little confusing since it started displaying a generic personas theme on this restart. I figured I should still make the post anyway since there's that to address, plus it might provide some insight to anyone else experiencing the issues I was having.

the original posts' draft
Hi, first post on the forums and I'd like to open saying that I've been using pale moon since 3.x and I love it as a lightweight alternative to FF. However, in the update to 19.0.1 I had some issues (ranging from trivial to slightly problematic) and I'll be honest in that I'm not 100% sure where I should've put this thread. firstly, I'm using pale moon 19.0.1-x64 on windows 7 ultimate 64-bit, I was using a personas theme but after following the basic troubleshooting instructions in the sticky personas broke? (lol wut)

Anyway, normally I have PM pinned to my taskbar, so I thought it was kind of strange that when it updated it created a new tab instead of opening in the pinned one, thinking nothing of it, I just removed the old pinned tab and replaced it with the current one. this is trivial and I'm not sure if it was meant to happen or just a side effect of something known or what, but whatever, that wasn't that particularly important to me, however, later on in using it, I noticed that of my installed extensions (ABP, noscript, ghostery, personas, a game web launcher that's been deactivated for eons and am not sure why I haven't removed) only personas and ABP were actually working. the options and setup for noscript and ghostery are still appearing as normal, but neither are blocking anything as they should, their context menus are gone, and so are their status bar icons, which I can't seem to re-add. I did some light searching and saw nothing about this on ghostery or NS's sites, nor on mozilla.org or even here on these forums. I did see one partially related thread here but it doesn't really seem completely relevant to my issue. also, as mentioned earlier after resetting toolbars and preferences even personas broke (UI options are now gone, can't set new themes) it is also worth noting that I have a laptop using the /exact/ same setup and experiences only the not-openning-from-pinned-app thing. it'd kinda suck if one of my addons is causing the issue but I've tried disabling them 1 and 2 at a time with no real change.
also, if necessary, debugging info here:

Welcome to the forum! Nice to see the hide button getting two outings! :) Probably best to start with easiest point first:
in original posts' draft loliwut wrote:Anyway, normally I have PM pinned to my taskbar, so I thought it was kind of strange that when it updated it created a new tab instead of opening in the pinned one....
This "spawning of an extra icon" is a "quirk" (perhaps a bug?) in the Windows 7 taskbar and isn't a Pale Moon problem - search and you will find it happens with many other Apps too. Further discussion and links in two recent forum topics: http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=2080 and http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=2104 Keyword searches on the forum will find more instances of this subject and if you ever come across the definitive explanation of this "quirk" somewhere please post asap! ;)
to begin with loliwut wrote:I was going to make a post about some nagging issues with this particular build of PM, but I just restarted the browser one more time (it was like the 10th time? nfi why it decided to actually do something this time). --------------- and then later (in the original posts' draft) remarked ---------------

Have you updated all the way from Pale Moon 3.x to 19.0.1 without doing a clean install/updating your profile? If you haven't, I wonder if your catalogue of strange issues that mostly "fixed themselves" after your 10th restart of Pale Moon 19.0.1 might indicate it's time to bite the bullet and make a new profile? See Moonchild's advice: http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1307
finally loliwut wrote:I noticed that of my installed extensions (ABP, noscript, ghostery, personas, a game web launcher that's been deactivated for eons and am not sure why I haven't removed) only personas and ABP were actually working. the options and setup for noscript and ghostery are still appearing as normal, but neither are blocking anything as they should, their context menus are gone, and so are their status bar icons, which I can't seem to re-add.
All the way through Beta testing to the current Pale Moon 19.0.1 Release the test team reported no problems such as those you describe with Personas (now renamed Themes by AMO) or popular Add-ons such as NoScript, Adblock Plus & Ghostery - even when moving backwards and forwards between PM 15.4.1 and PM 19.x versions frequently. Your symptoms again suggest a clean install with a new profile would be worth considering: http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=662

This "spawning of an extra icon" is a "quirk"...
Seems you're right, I guess I'll look into that and see if I could shed any light on the situation myself.

actually, while old, this profile is from PM5, though I don't remember which specific build. I have, since my previous posting, backed up my bookmarks and started a new profile just in case. Partly related to both this and your last quote, It turned out that when NS started working again the whitelist was reset and it made personas stop functioning properly. Not completely sure why, though I do know that the reason why I couldn't add new ones, at least, was because it was blocking the getpersonas domain. I'm not having any problems now (aside from having to reset my tracker listing for ghostery and whitelist for NS, etc, since I clean installed), but thanks for the help and suggestions, it's been insightful.
