Youtube's future new interface

Post by Nova25 » 2017-12-04, 23:27

Soooo... Google/Youtube is beginning to, more insistently, try to make people switch to their future(and surely inevitable... sigh...) interface, with annoying blue bars atop Youtube pages.
Clicking on it leads to a page clamoring the merits of that new interface and etc, but... It seems that 'Palemoon' is, apparently, ''not compatible'' with the future interface ? I have no bloody idea 'how' that's even possible, for a UI/Interface to not be ''compatible'', honestly ?

In any case, here's a sample of the page (which, of course  , insist on cramming Google Chrome in our throat) :

« A Fresh New Look for YouTube
Our new desktop design puts the videos and creators you love front and center with a cleaner, simpler layout that lets content shine. Learn more about it below!

Your browser is not supported. Try it with the latest Google Chrome.

So, yeah. What's going there ? And, what's the plan, for Palemoon, going forward ?

Search the forum for YouTube interface and you'll find previous threads discussing the subject. Basically, the new interface was poorly received by various Pale Moon users because the dense scripting ends up being very CPU intensive. A useragent override pref was added to drop Pale Moon back to the old (more usable) YouTube interface. If you want to use the new interface, modify the useragent string in the general.useragent.override.youtube.com pref in about:config.

I went with the new user interface of YT to get the Dark Theme because the dark theme was easier on my eyes to see things so I had to change my user agent. Basically, one either likes the new look or they don't so it comes down to user preference.

If you want to see the new youtube in Pale Moon which user agent do you use to replace/modify the one that is there?

The user agent I use to access the new YouTube interface, which allows me to use YT's dark theme, in 64 bit Windows 7 using 32 bit Pale Moon 27.6.2 is below:

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:45.9) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.9 (Pale Moon)
MX Linux 25 (Infinity) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
Linux Debian 13.3 (Trixie) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox

Okay thank you.

I just tried the one that FF 57 uses and that works but I think I'll use the one you posted.

Update: that one works good. I think I prefer this look on YT but if my cpu starts acting up on it I'll fall back.

And in 64 bit linux Mint 18.2, the user agent I use for YouTube's new design, which gives me YouTube's dark theme using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 27.6.2, is below:

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:45.9) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.9 (Pale Moon)
MX Linux 25 (Infinity) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox

Yeah it is a little cpu intensive and site feels a little slower for me. Doesn't take much to get my fan going - a video and a couple of tabs - 2 vids easy. Not terrible since it will calm down but still. I like it quiet and quick like it was. I'm going to reset that back to default and use older YT version which is fine. Thanks for the info.

My fan does not rev up when I'm viewing YouTube videos whether I'm using windows or linux Pale Moon. My fans are whisper quiet on all of my four computers (2 desktop tower computers, 2 laptops) when I'm viewing YT's videos on any of my computers.

I think I have a sensitive fan and when I say set it off, I mean its lowest increase in speed. Pale Moon usually never sets it off no matter what I am doing (except for this one time with new YT). The CPU and memory usually stay in a very low range.

Thanks for the PM useragent thing.
I browsed the "new design" link in FF and, yup, it looks a bit more mobile/Tetris style, but I cannot see much difference in their "clean" design. The main page still looks horrible to me.
In FF (+ ABP + NoScript) on a video page I've seen even more ads, not only in the upper right corner and before the main video, but also more ad overlays(?) in the main videos itself. - I didn't know that from using Pale Moon.
Hmm well, if that's youtube future it's not mine but just one more step into my Hall of Avoidance.

I don't see any ads at all on YouTube using FF57 (or other versions of FF) or PM (with either user agent).
I have uBlock Origin installed on both browsers. uBlock Origin is the only extension I have installed on FF.

I just noticed there must be something wrong. I haven't installed FF (53 eme-free) for so long and didn't care much about it's configuration, but now I find I can't check/uncheck option boxes in ABP settings. Nothing happens.
I'll give ublock origin a try, THX
