Control-Left Arrow and -Right Arrow Don't Jump By Words?

Post by NoelC » 2017-10-02, 15:49

Hello,

I'm in the midst of making a transition from IE to Pale Moon (+ uBlock Origin) for my general use. Everything in general works as well or better in Pale Moon - I'm quite impressed - but there is ONE nagging little thing that's worse and I haven't been able to figure out how to work around it yet...

In many forum editors (e.g., at AskWoody.com) when editing with Pale Moon the forum treats Control-Left Arrow just like the "Home" key, and Control-Right Arrow like the "End" key. THIS forum editor, however, seems to be an exception. Control-Left Arrow and Control-Right Arrow DO work as expected here - they jump by words.

My questions are these:
  • Is it the fault of forum editors for not recognizing what browser I'm using, and thus misinterpreting my usage of these keys?
    .
  • Is there something that can be configured in Pale Moon to cause Control-Left Arrow and Control-Right Arrow to more often be interpreted as "jump one word" rather than "jump to the beginning/end of the line"?
Thanks.

-Noel

Welcome to the forum NoelC,

Just tried a few forums that I am a member of and found that the Control-Left Arrow and Control-Right Arrow keys jump one word at a time in either of the appropriate directions using Pale Moon 27.5 in Windows 7. And I am using uBlock Origin as well. If it does help, make sure your 3rd-party filter(s) are up to date and if the issue still persists then post the 3rd-party filters you use in uBlock.

It's possible that uBlock Origin is using a 3rd-party filter in your case that I am not using or perhaps a different version of the same that might be why you have different results. You could try disabling uBlock Origin for a forum with this problem and see if this helps.

If you have any other add-ons (it looks like you perhaps do not) then try using Pale Moon in "safe-mode" (Help>Start with Add-ons disabled..., select "continue in Safe Mode") and see if the editing of the forums you use regarding these keys work as expected (note: PM will exit "safe-mode" when you exit the browser in this state). If this solves the problem then you probably have an extension interfering with these key combinations.

^ follow-up: maybe you can post a few URL links to the forums that have this problem and with enough perhaps some on this board might be a member of the forum and therefore can try testing the forum to see if they can confirm the problem or alternatively find that they do not have the same issue as you have.....

Sorry about not finding my way right back here.

One forum I'm seeing fail with this particular key combo is: https://askwoody.com/forums/

It just occurred to me that I've at some point set the "Firefox Compatibility" User Agent Mode. I will experiment with that and see if it changes the behavior.

I just tested the askwoody.com website you linked about and am able to go back and forth one word at a time using the ctrl+ left/right arrow. ctrl+left-arrow goes back ward oneword at a time and ctrl+right-arrow goes forward one word at a time.

I am using Pale Moon 27.5.1 on Windows 7.

Since it works in my case you might consider testing Pale Moon for this site using Pale Moon in "safe-mode" (Help>Restart with Add-ons Disabled...., then click on "continue in Safe Mode" button to test this way. If this solves your problem then please post the add-ons you are using. (PM will exit "safe-mode" when you exit that browser session).

Btw, I am currently using the User Agent Mode: "Native" for Compatibility Mode setting in Pale Moon....

I just tested "Firefox Compatibility" mode and it stills works the same, no problem with either Compatibility Mode setting....

To clarify my test on the askwoody.com website to make sure we are on the same page:
askwoody website.png
I am using ctrl+arrows (right/left) to navigate the example edit box text which jumps one word at a time in either direction as expected.

You are saying that at this stage on that website you do not get the same result?

Since switching from "FireFox" compatibility to "Geckco" I also now see the Control-Left Arrow and Control-Right Arrow jump one word at a time. That change alone made the difference.

I believe the AskWoody site editor does something different for those who log in, and maybe different still for MVP users, but I'm not sure about that second part. It doesn't look like the screen you grabbed to me... It's probably because I selected the Text tab.

But AskWoody is not the only place I saw the unexpected control-arrow experience. Another was an Adobe Insider forum that's not easily accessed without an invitation.

In any case, the problem seems resolved now and I'm seeing no different problems with having made the change to Gecko compatibility, so it's all good.

Thanks for trying to help.
