Way to merge Recently Closed Tabs with regular history menu?

Post by paulri » 2017-08-24, 17:54

I clicked on my History icon, and scanned the drop down list of sites I had visited, only to not see the ones I was looking for. I then noticed something for the first time---a Recently Closed Tabs menu item. I found the tabs I was looking for there.

I think it would be easier, and more intuitive, to just shove the most recently closed tabs in the regular history menu. Is there a way to do this, with or without an extension? If I don't see something in that drop down menu, my next reaction is not to look in a new menu, but simply to look in the Show All History window.

Is this really intuitive though? The "Recently Closed Tabs" could have been closed hours/days/weeks ago if one tends not to close tabs and the browser frequently. Tab Mix Plus and Session Manager for example offer more advanced 'Closed Tabs' management but as for 'integrating' this in History, I don't know. They are different things.

When I think of "History," I think of tabs and windows that I've opened up---in the past. And the first few sites that are visible when I click on the History icon in the toolbar suggest to me, that they are the most recent ones, so yes putting the most recent tabs/windows in the History tab seems intuitive enough for me.

Do you know if the addons you mentioned can do this?

Hmmm regardless of when the tabs were initially opened, I'd like the most recently closed tabs in that history view.

I think I see your point---that these tabs that I have kept open, might have been open for days or weeks. That's quite possible, but when I do close them, it would still be nice to see them in that history menu, because I really don't know off the top of my head, when I've opened them. And when I click on the history icon, its not very important to me when I opened them up, just so that I can quickly access the most recent tabs.

But yeah I see what you were getting at (I think)---that the most recently opened tabs aren't necessarily the most recently closed tabs. But I'd still like an option for this, even if it wasn't default---to have the two views/menus merged.

Opened/closed tabs belong to your browsing session, not browsing history. A small, but important difference. I couldn't find something relevant with a quick look on the Tab Mix Plus options, you'll have to check the extensions yourself. You may find a good workaround for what you are after.

I use TMP's Session Manager toolbar icon (not to be confused with the Session Manager extension) to quickly restore a previous session, it's quite handy.

I don't think I'll install an extension. At least I am going to click on the same icon (Hisotry) for either recently closed tabs or recent windows open up. If I don't see what I want in the history, I'll at least know to look in the recent closed tabs menu.
