Clean notifications list, how ?

Post by bawldiggle » 2016-04-12, 05:30

How do I remove "read" items from my "Manage notifications" list ?

Items remain on the "Manage notifications" list even after unsubscribing from the specific thread and refreshing my Notifications page)

Thank you :)

maybe you can ask the people on www.phpbb.com since they created the forum software?
I don't know off-hand how to do this from within the software.

Moonchild :)

I am onto it ! I have joined the phpBB forum
This is not as easy as I thought -- I have a better understanding of what you are up against and the pressure you are under.

I am glad to be able to help out.
- I wont bore you with details until I get a more definitive answer

Waiting for phpBB forum approval of my post.
Spent some time searching their forum looking for clues,

So far it looks like a setting in phpBB can change the number of days that "Notifications" are kept. Default is 30 days.
- no signs of filtering or sorting .

Their FAQs for version 3.1 and later are not yet finalised, so the only FAQs are for v3.0

As soon as my post is up ... I will post the link here

At last my post has been approved (overnight here), its Wed 20th 6:45am local time (we are GMT + 10) or 10:45pm CEST Tuesday 19th

... Notifications growing at an infinite rate

The attitude at phpBB appears to be "let them (us) eat cake" ! ...

Once I get my day started (including employees) I will get back to the phpBB forum and dig some more
------------

EDIT
If "Manage Notifications" in a Pale Moon member's Control Panel is a phpBB caption ... there is no management other than to mark items as "read"

For the benefit of others (not in the know) ...
This Pale Moon forum is made available to all of us using the phpBB project. phpBB is Open source

Default "Notifications" setting for phpBB browser template is very, very basic.
  • "Notifications list retention is 30 days" ... a phpBB factory setting
- there are no individual member settings -- what you see is what we all get
- no sorting, no hiding, no deleting (selective or otherwise) ... leaves a lot to be desired

As phpBB is an open source project it is maintained by volunteers only, so like many of the dedicated volunteers on this PM forum I am grateful for the labour-of-love by the clever people.
The only way I see of getting a more versatile "Notifications" management, is to put in a request for an "Extension" to be created by phpBB dedicated volunteers.
There are a couple of phpBB members offering to "program" but they might be by commercial arrangement ? I don't know
There are no "Notification" extensions in the phpBB extensions pipeline (that I could find)

My suggestion:
- sortable by thread caption A>Z an Z>A
- date sortable
- hide items (by each member) ... and rely on the retention setting to clear "old" items -- based on the retention setting of phpBB for Pale Moon forum

If we try for "too clever" I think we might put some phpBB developers off
- when I was last at phpBB they had a total of 84 Notification in 24 hours for their own forum
- Palemoon was over 1,000 in the same period

IMHO phpBB structure is very accessible, even for newbies -- there are some very complex and difficult forums "out-there" to navigate through

phpBB forum threads re "Notifications"

Post by bawldiggle » 2016-05-09, 06:46

From my research notes ...

[How-to remove read notifications ?] 6-Nov-2014
just use "Unread Posts"
- even from a "Users Control Panel" a PM user gets all unread posts for the entire forum :wtf:
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2272516

... then How to change default notifications settings response by "Lumpy Burgertushie" is just astounding and dismissive.
- Personally I rely on notifications to let me know of new posts in the threads that I want to follow.

--- and then this comment by parshakov particularly ..."
I don't want to force users to check the forum every five minutes
[How to change default notifications settings] 18-Nov-2014
- guides to change Notifcation settings

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2276161

I have looked through phpBB Extension Database Releases, 185 of them, but no mention of Notifications extensions

At first light here I checked how many unread posts PaleMoon has ... 1000+ and they are all dated in the last 24 hours, whereas phpBB forum 89 notifications, no wonder phpBB advisors assume "their" experience is every one else's
-----
Extension Requests (for phpBB v3.1.x) forum is by volunteers only, there are 1702 requests in hand ... obviously a waiting list, and they are probably over extended as it is ... not enough knowledgeable volunteers

Also keep in mind that they completely changed the structure around between 3.0 and 3.1 -- there are barely any 3.1 extensions out there in comparison to 3.0 mods, and people don't seem to be very interested in putting in the time and effort because they already made something for the previous version of phpBB (does that sound familiar? Mozilla XUL extensions -> SDK -> webextensions -> ???) and don't want to double their efforts. So.. abandonement on one side, and lack of interest to create new ones on the other.

I personally don't understand the extension system they devised. mods were a lot easier to create. Now it's with some sort of API/pluggable framework.

Would you be OK with me trying for an extension at phpBB.

I know success won't happen over night (if ever) but I think it is worth a try and I am willing to give it a shot and let you get on with more pressing needs here on PM

phpBB isn't. We're just users.
