Resolved: Favicons go missing every day.

Post by Ageless » 2016-02-19, 23:49

Since a couple of days now I have this irritating problem that all my favicons go missing. I don't know what's causing it, it happens at random, but still once every day.
I end up with putting my profile backup back, after that I have all favicons again. Then just browse around, use my browser as normal and sometime during the next day, upon a new start of the browser, all favicons are blank again.

I now have FaviconReloader installed, but that shouldn't be needed.
Pale Moon x64 26.0.3 on Windows 7 x64.

Any ideas anyone?

Are you talking about bookmark favicons? I just recently had a similar issue as you. What I did was delete the places.sqlite file, which is in your Profile folder. If you don't know where it's at, navigate to Pale Moon AppMenu>> Help>> Troubleshoot Information>> Show Folder under the category of Profile Folder. Another way is to click Alt>> Help and so on from there.

Oh and don't forget to clear the cache so you are downloading fresh favicons for the websites.
With Pale Moon by my side, surfing the web is quite enjoyable and takes my headaches away! :)

Deleting the places.sqlite will delete all history, bookmarks and site preferences. Don't do this unless you have a backup of your bookmarks to import after that.

I'm not going to delete places.sqlite, I know that that's where the bookmarks live and thus the favicons, so I'd be shooting myself in the foot trying to fix things that way.
I did in the mean time update to 26.1.0, will see if tonight my (bookmark) favicons go missing again.

Yup, they're gone again.

And all I did was close the browser, then open it again.
I may have tried to open it too fast, but would that clear all favicons?

Will go test that...

edit:
I put places.sqlite back from my backup.
I have seen I had a places.sqlite.corrupt dated 10-2-2016 of the same size as my present places.sqlite file.
The places.sqlite file Pale Moon has after the reset is just 10 MB, while normally it's 76MB.

Opened PM, closed it, within 4 seconds opened it. Populated normally.
Closed PM, opened withing 3 seconds. Populated normally.
Same for 2 and 1 seconds.
So it's not at this time a case of closing and reopening too fast.

Also opened it, opened 4 tabs, closed it, reopened it within 2 seconds. Populated normally.

I've fixed it for the moment by doing an in-place repair installation of Windows 7.
And although that has caused other problems (like missing TortoiseGit right-click icons), it's nothing I cannot fix eventually.
I've gone through 44 reboots the past 3.5 days, have had Pale Moon exit done by me, by Windows. In all cases the bookmark favicons stayed.
