Distorted video playing with Palemoon 26.2.0

Unread post by Kunagi7 » 2016-04-07, 19:49

Hello,
I updated Palemoon yesterday to the latest version (Pale Moon 26.2.0 (x64)) and really weird stuff started to happen with some youtube (and twitter) videos when I have gstreamer enabled:
Image
If I disable gstreamer youtube fallbacks to webm which works perfectly:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrfxcR771BA
For other videos it just works:

I use Fedora 23 (x64), GNOME 3 with an Intel HD Graphics.
I have both 0.10 and 1 gstreamer installed:

I can't reproduce; the first video shown plays fine for me. Do you use any extensions that deal with video or YouTube?

I only have 5 enabled extensions:
Name: Adblock Latitude
Version: 3.0.3.1
Enabled: true
ID: {016acf6d-e5c0-4768-9376-3763d1ad1978}

Name: Blue Moon Linux
Version: 3.0
Enabled: true
ID: bluemoonlinux@addons.palemoon.org

Name: CanvasBlocker
Version: 0.1.3.1-signed
Enabled: true
ID: CanvasBlocker@kkapsner.de

Name: FireGestures
Version: 1.8.7.1-signed
Enabled: true
ID: firegestures@xuldev.org

Name: Private Tab
Version: 0.1.9.1
Enabled: true
ID: privateTab@infocatcher
It happens randomly, I watched several videos without a problem until I played this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-28SOWEWts
And happened again.

Pale Moon 26.2.0 Release notes wrote:Linux: gstreamer 1.0 support has been implemented and enabled by default (hats off to Travis!)
From this version forward you will need to have gstreamer 1.0 libraries for video playback (0.10 is no longer supported).

Good point, but my Lubuntu 14.04.4 system seems to have both (the 0.10s pkgs might just be libraries maybe?). In any case, I'm not seeing those bugs here.

The OP appears to have all the required GSteamer 1.x packages installed.

I just played multiple YouTube videos including this one and they all played correctly. Have you tried with a new profile?

I tried with a new profile, also in GNOME3 on X.org and GNOME3 on Wayland, with the same result.
I can see this in the console output:
libva info: VA-API version 0.38.1
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib64/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_0_38
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
Maybe it's trying to play with the GPU and fails?
Removed gstreamer1-vaapi-0.6.1-1.fc23.x86_64 and it was solved.

Fedora ships a 7 month old gstreamer1-vaapi: https://cgit.freedesktop.org/gstreamer/gstreamer-vaapi (release 1.8 vs 0.6.1).

We've gotten other reports of odd behavior when using vaapi. At this point I think the best option is to not use gstreamer-vaapi.

Trying to install a recent version of vaapi means to compile all the gstreamer plugins too  . I hope that fedora 24 will ship a more recent one to test things out...
Surprisingly, CPU load is now lower than previous versions of Pale Moon :wtf:, for a 720p video it used to be over 30% and now is 10% .

Mozilla has received similar reports that in many cases Firefox used less CPU as well without gstreamer-vaapi.

I'd be interested in seeing the results if you do test this on Fedora 24

There is an alpha right now but we have to wait until June for a release version though.
Well... The alpha has the same version:
gstreamer1-vaapi x86_64 0.6.1-1.fc24 fedora 467 k

I installed gstreamer-vaapi on my system, and the results were terrible. YouTube wouldn't even play the video, and CPU usage jumped over 10% higher than normal when on YouTube (and no video was playing!).

So at this point in time, Pale Moon should be considered incompatible with gsteamer-vaapi.

Mozilla teams has a wontfix bug from Firefox 25, interesting to read: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=894372

Did you try 360p and 720p?
Distro and gstreamer-vaapi version?

There are several bugs at Mozilla regarding this and they are all either "WONTFIX" or "WORKSFORME", because in each case a newer vaapi or libva version was released which improved or resolved the issue for the person who opened the bug.

I only tried 720p.
Manjaro with gstreamer-vaapi 1.60
