Transmission
I have not been able to get the client transmission working successfully with Pale Moon. Is this a common problem or is there something I'm doing wrong? It has always worked easily for me in the past. Thank you.

Check Preferences > Applications and make sure Transmission is set to open magnet links.

I am not sure what you mean here. I checked under "Preferences" and under "Applications" there is no indication of Transmission. There is a designation called "magnet" and that has opposite it "always ask." I tried to put in Transmission in place of "always ask" but I'm not sure how to do it. Is this what you're talking about?

Yes that is correct. Sorry I should have been more clear in my previous post. You should be able to change the magnet designation from "always ask" to Transmission. If it doesn't show in the drop down list, choose "use other", and you will be able to browse to Transmission's location and select it that way.

Appreciate that clarification! Only I tried it and still I'm not able to download. Something is not allowing this to work. Is there anything else you suggest? Much appreciate your support and assistance!

I've never been able to get .torrent or .magnet content types to appear in the Pale Moon applications dialog under Xubuntu 15.04, but those MIME types usually start Transmission or focus its open dialog whenever activating a torrent link. When all else fails, right-clicking to copy the link address and pasting into Transmission's File > Open URL... seems to work.
@trava90: Is there a way to manually edit the prefs file to include these content types if they aren't being added automatically?

/usr/bin/transmission-gtk is now set - in Pale Moon's Applications tab - to open magnet links.

The top rated solution was simple, once you know to check the checkbox to "always use the chosen app." I normally keep my options open for future changes and pass on those prompts, but in this case it prevented the content type from appearing in the Applications tab. Makes complete sense now. Thanks for the pointer

Okay...sorry but I got lost through the above exchanges! I'm still not certain what the most straightforward way is to get the "magnet" listing connected with Transmission. I understand to go through the "Preferences" to "Applications," but what then? How do I get to the usr/bin page that has the Transmission link to magnet? Does this process have to be repeated each time or is there a way to set it so that it will just work each time you go to a torrent page? That is the way Transmission used to work.

Thank you for that reference. I did the process as described but still no response. The torrent did not recognize the client. It was as if nothing was installed. What can I try from here? Again, appreciate the excellent feedback!

My Ubuntu version is 14.04. When I click carry over the information all I see is a blank Transmission page. There is no indication of anything beyond the controls at the top of the page.

Okay, well, this will be no help. On Mint 17.1 KDE I get no 'carry over the information', and what I did I did for magnets only anyway (I only use magnets these days - and CraigPD seems to have verified that the process works for torrent files; so initially I didn't even try it with those).
For me, clicking on a torrent link I get the option to 'Download with DownThemAll' or 'Save file' - and that's all! Without further investigating that issue I just saved the .torrent, then opened it - at which it automatically start in Ktorrent! When I uninstalled Ktorrent it automatically started in Transmission. At no point did 'torrent' (or 'BitTorrent seed file') appear in Preferences/Applications.
I searched my Pale Moon profile folder for 'magnet' in content, opened mimeTypes.rdf in a text editor, copied the 'magnet' entries and changed the copies to read 'BitTorrent seed file'. Thereafter 'BitTorrent seed file' did appear in Preferences/Applications and I was able to select for it to open in transmission-gtk (that being the one part I hadn't copied, because I wanted to test that it would be selectable - assuming it worked at all!). However, clicking a torrent link still only brings up the 'Download with DownThemAll' or 'Save file' option; so clearly more editing is required!
And now I need to get to bed - and anyway it is obvious the Mint KDE solution is not right for Ubuntu, with - presumably - Unity. And editing files such as mimeTypes.rdf is not really an acceptable solution for Mint KDE either, actually, even if it does work (which I presume it will, eventually)! Hopefully CraigPD or Travis will make an appearance again soon.

It's also possible that having DtA installed will simply intercept unknown file types instead of using the standard method of selecting applications.
I'm not sure how file types and mime types are registered in Linux at the system level, though, which would likely be the root cause of it not showing up -- some Linux gurus will have to help you with that one.

Follow-up: Apparently the process of adding magnet file association for Transmission in Pale Moon by pointing “use other...” to usr/bin/transmission-gtk had the side effect of incapacitating the previous Use Transmission (default) action for BitTorrent seed file content. The first .torrent link I attempted to download afterward (today) produced the following error dialog.
So I changed BitTorrent seed files to also point to usr/bin/transmission-gtk and now both .magnet and .torrent links automatically open in Transmission without any download option dialog or error message - this in Xubuntu 15.04, as yet untested in Mint 17.1.
I also use the DownThemAll extension, but prior to adding the magnet association I never had an issue with torrents automatically opening in Transmission, though there was never a content listing in Pale Moon application preferences. It simply worked. Far from a Linux guru my only other suggestion would be to check /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache to see if both file associations are correctly listed as:

In the same directory right click Transmission - properties and under the Launcher tab see if the command appears similar to this:
I believe this is where file (mime) types are registered at the system level which may be modified by Pale Moon application preferences, at least in this case of adding magnet and torrent file associations.

I disabled DtA (and deleted mimeTypes.rdf so a default version was created without Transmission registered[?] for .magnet) and next time I d-clicked the torrent all I got was the (non-) option to 'Save as'. When I go to "Edit"-"Preferences" I do not see BitTorrent seed file on my list of items. I do have "Magnets" and on that I inserted the "Transmission" preference. So how do I get the BitTorrent seed file on my list of preferences, if that is indeed the problem? Incidentally, I have 14.04 Xubuntu, not Ubuntu...if that makes a difference. Is that what is causing the client to be unresponsive?

It's a plain text file, not executable in the terminal. Using Thunar or the default file manager, right click and choose open with the default text editor.
