Supplemental Update for 2014-10-18

Unread post by New Tobin Paradigm » 2014-10-18, 22:28

Forecastfox Pseudo-Static version has been updated to 2.2.4 please head to the add-ons site to get this update.

Notice: We currently do not have the ability to automatically update add-ons like Psuedo-Statics so please go and get it. Also note updated Pseudo-Statics do not require removal before you update them. Only if you have the main-line version installed and are switching to pseudo-statics.

Also automatic updates from AMO are still supported however a known issue has been preventing those from happening See below:
http://www.palemoon.org/knownissues.shtml wrote:
3. Add-on update checks don't work

This is caused by a hidden, undocumented feature in the Mozilla code that requires a very strict check on the certificate presented by the add-ons server.

Status: [In Progress]

Workaround: Create a new boolean preference [in about:config] called extensions.update.requireBuiltInCerts and set it to false

Pseudo-Statics, Forks, and Misconceptions

Unread post by New Tobin Paradigm » 2014-10-26, 20:04

To avoid any ambiguity we need to establish some points when it comes to how we are handling Psuedo-Statics, Forks, and Externals on the add-ons site.

Allow me to define the terms once more.

Psuedo-Static - These add-ons are temporary modified versions of add-ons for Pale Moon 25+. They have their unique identifier changed so that the original versions are not update overwritten from AMO. They are largely unchanging as newer versions may become wholly incompatible with Pale Moon due to things like Jetpack and Australis. This does not mean they do not retain a potential for updates but they most likely will not.

In addition to changing the unique identifer we generally remove support for other programs from these Psuedo-Statics including the very per-application overlay specific parts that made them incompatible in the first place. We remove meta-data for Firefox/SeaMonkey/Thunderbird and only specify Pale Moon as an installable target. We also append (Pseudo-Static) to the name of the add-on and -pm to the version. We also add (Modified by Pale Moon Add-ons Team) to the author.

Because Psuedo-Statics are TEMPORARY MODIFICATIONS pending developer response we do not rebrand them as this is not necessary because any branding issue will be resolved as soon as the developer has responded if they will support us directly or if we need to fork it which of course branding will be changed to not infrenge or cause excessive confusion with the orginal product. if a developer has an issue that can't wait until a decision has been made they can request that the Pseudo-Static be removed from the add-ons site by contacting Pale Moon Project personnel. We only ask for some leeway while things are pending.

Forks - These add-ons are forked from their original developers either by the "Pale Moon Add-ons Team" or in some circumstances my self under Binary Outcast. The reason it is a full fork is because the add-on developer has abandoned it or has chosen to not support Pale Moon or the add-on will switch to incompatible technologies. Many current Psuedo-Statics MAY end up turning into full forks depending on the status of their original developer.

Externals - Because many Firefox add-ons still work without issue with Pale Moon or have well rounded kind developers who have added direct Pale Moon 25+ support to their add-on we see no reason to mirror it on our site and would prefer to respect the developer's chosen distribution outlet. This may be AMO (Mozilla's Add-on Site) or developer's own website. These are marked on the Pale Moon add-ons site as [External] and you will be redirected to the appropriate location in a new tab/window.

Now, there are some add-ons we will NOT be bringing into the Psuedo-Static/Forked strategy. These include (but not limited to):
- Add-ons that are side-loaded such as those provided by otherwise generic download managers
- The dozens of Youtube Downloaders and similar add-ons (Video DownloadHelper is one that does work. I am sure there may be a few others)
- Arbitrary toolbars like Google's and the like
- Dictionaries and Search Engines and those webapprt things that we don't include the runtime for anymore

As we work to bring more add-ons on to the site you have to understand the priority we are giveing them. While we intend to fulfill our user's requests in the end we must prioritize what we Psuedo-Static, Fork, or list as an External. Priority is given to reported add-ons that are either insanely popular or have been abandoned. As these are the ones that are least likely to gain Pale Moon direct support. You also must remember this is a process and will not be accomplished in a short period of time.

I hope this has helped answer some questions about what is going on. Thank you for your attention. Please direct your questions to the general thread.

What we need is some latitude!

Unread post by New Tobin Paradigm » 2014-11-20, 08:53

Adblock Latitude by Binary Outcast has just launched and been added to the site. Also, yesterday, due to the implications expressed in the tickets asking for direct Pale Moon support for ABP and ABE the Pseudo-Static versions have been removed from the Pale Moon Add-ons Site.

Pale Moon Add-ons Site Server Move and Maintenance

Unread post by New Tobin Paradigm » 2014-12-05, 02:31

The Pale Moon Add-ons site is moving to a new server as this progresses the site may be intermittent or down at times.

The advantage of this is that it will now have a dedicated system capable of handling the increasing load placed upon it. Including the future deployment of our update solution so that Pale Moon specific add-ons will be able to get updates from the Add-on Manager while still getting updates from Mozilla's Add-on site as well.

Also this move and reconfiguration will be followed up by much needed enhancements to the site including:

- Revised content layout for Extensions and Themes
- Developer Documentation for Traditional XUL/Toolkit add-ons as well as those pesky Jetpack ones
- More Forks and Externals listed on the site (and themes)
- Listing of Plugins including a link to the last great flash version (as well as the newest one)
- Improvements to the page displayed in the "discover" (Get Add-ons) pane of the add-on manager
- Revised Incompatibilities Page (As well as separating those out that have been resolved as of Pale Moon v25 and those that remain incompatible)
- and much more

Look forward to it!

There is more to come so keep poking about for exciting changes!

Update for 2014-12-16

Unread post by New Tobin Paradigm » 2014-12-16, 11:22

The search results page has been revised with an all new results style with a link to perform your search on AMO as well. The Front Page has also been updated. In addition, some oversights were corrected site wide to bring it into better alignment with the main website.

We shall be updating the layout for each individual add-on page so you may get momentary errors so just try refreshing the page if you hit one.

DOM Inspector main-line has been updated to version 2.15 and added direct Pale Moon 25+ support. We encourage you update to that version on AMO and remember to remove the Pseudo-Static if you have it installed as they will conflict.

Good times!

Adblock Latitude update from ABP Pseudo-Static

Unread post by New Tobin Paradigm » 2015-01-06, 19:59

While we are still working on the general use server side add-on manager update service provider for Pale Moon specific add-ons we have written in a temporary bit of logic to allow our in-house ad blocker to be served updates.

As alluded to previously, when updates are provided from our server users of the Adblock Plus temporary "Pseudo-Static" would be served an update to Adblock Latitude when the add-on manager next looks for updates.

Users who have their add-ons set to update automatically have nothing to worry about. Just make sure you give the browser a restart to clear the cache and fully load ABL. HOWEVER, those who have updates on add-ons set to manually check will notice some confusing and contradictory information. When you are served the update it will still say "Adblock Plus" but with a version number of 3.0.0.. Obviously there IS no ABP 3.0.0. The version number comes from the update xml file while the icon and name comes from the locally installed extension.

Despite this unique situation you ARE being served the proper add-on and version. For continued support you must update to Adblock Latitude as the Pseudo-Static is NOT being maintained and will almost certainly break in future versions of Pale Moon.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask in the Adblock Latitude official thread here: http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=6614
