Can't Add File as an Attachment in Forum

Post by suzyne » 2025-08-10, 01:48

The last two times I have tried to add an image to a forum reply, with the Attachments tab, and Add files button area when posting a reply, it hasn't worked.

I an not sure exactly how long ago that it did work, but it would have a few weeks ago, but now there is a HTTP error after clicking on the Open button of the file dialogue.

This is what the error looks like.

I wondered is it something about the file, so I download ace.jpg but it won't attach for me. Strange.

At the time of this posting I am using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 33.8.1.2 running in 64 bit MX Linux 23.6 (Libretto) Xfce to post this message. I will try posting an image (via attachment) and see if it takes. And it does. I am using mostly default settings in Pale Moon.

Since I am using a linux distro, could it be this error is just affecting the Windows operating system?

Maybe you can use the devtools network tab to see what happens when you try to attach something? I don't see anything odd in the logs on the forum side.

In the first image everything is "green" and the bottom GET was the last message before clicking on the Add files button. In other words, there were no new entries added to the Network tab, when the error appears. (Pale Moon 33.8.1.2 32-bit, on Windows 10).

Second image, extra information.

If it remains a mystery, then it's back to Postimages for me. (Which I had decided was a "bad idea" because of the loss of information if/when that site ever closes.)

In my previous posts I was using Pale Moon 32-bit.

But now I tried to attach the same file using Pale Moon 64-bit and it worked. Hope that helps explain something!

I honestly have no idea :coffee:

Your network pane should give you a POST line when you select the file to upload and close the dialog. That is when the file is supposed to be uploaded -- this is done with XHR, and I see nothing wrong with it.
If you can find that POST (e.g. by clearing the network pane of requests with the trash bin button right before you attempt and upload) can you copy the request and response headers?

Architecture of Pale Moon should not matter, either, so that's a real headscratcher. Do you perhaps use a proxy, or "internet security" software that might interfere? Maybe something that is locking the file you're trying to upload (antivirus or what not)?

I only have the default Windows security apps (whatever Windows 10 includes) and not using anything else but I will see if I can get that POST message sometime later today, I enjoy a challenge!

Since at least @frostknight has seen that message before, I don't feel like the only one, which is nice.

Are you sure your file is okay? Maybe it's some kind of phantom on OneDrive or something similar? Try copying the file somewhere on your hard drive, will it work? The problem could also be related to Unicode characters in the file name, a too long path, or access rights.
It looks like the browser can't open the file and the process doesn't even get to the point of transferring the file to the server.

After my initial post, I downloaded the same file that was uploaded successfully in an earlier reply.

This is what the file looks like below, and it loads fine and displays when I use the File Open command in Pale Moon, so I presume that it is "openable" and not corrupt.

But yeah, it's weird so I understand the questioning.

Did you try uploading the image by both using the 'Add files' button & also by drag & drop into the reply window?

I didn't even know that was possible! But I tried and got the same error appear as my original post.

I think I will try a new profile and see what happens.

I read here "When you get problems with Pale Moon, the first step is to test if the Pale Moon Safe Mode" here:

viewtopic.php?t=8240

So I followed the steps at the start of the post to go into Safe Mode. Went to make a reply and the image successfully attached. Quit and went back to starting Pale Moon normally and the problem immediately returned.

I guess that means that there is something funny about my extensions or profile? But since it is not a showstopper for me (I can work around the issue) and nobody else is regularly experiencing the problem, I am going to leave it as an peculiar puzzle that may never be resolved.

But I appreciate the suggestions and feedback. I had never used Safe Mode before, and while aware of the Network tab in the development tools, never actually used it before, so it's all a learning experience.

I would disable your add-ons one by one until you find the culprit.

Maybe post troubleshooting information, just in case something obvious stands out?
