How to revert Pale Moon to a previous version

Post by Garland » 2025-06-26, 16:11

If I suspect a Pale Moon update has broken a website, what steps do I take to revert to a previous version (and keep my installed add-ons)?

My PC is on x64 Windows 8.1
I always manually install Pale Moon, and I keep backups of palemoon-X.X.X.win64.installer.exe
I keep backups of C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Moonchild Productions\Pale Moon\ for each Pale Moon minor release

For me, is this the simplest procedure?
1) Uninstall Pale Moon
2) Install the old version of Pale Moon, but don't let it run automatically
3) Copy the version-specific backup data to C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Moonchild Productions\Pale Moon\
4) Run Pale Moon

I am not sure if this procedure handles correctly the registry.

Why not download the portable version of the old version you want to test.
That would run independently of your current installed version.

(What does the portable version do?
Unpacks itself, somewhere, I suppose. So just don't unpack it into/overtop of your existing installation location.

Oh, so that is what it does, simply unpacks, somewhere.)

I second this idea.

Its a very wise one.

Not sure why he isn't using portable in the first place. Constant installs can be a pain at times after all. Unless you are using archlinux. ;P

I say this because the packages remain in cache after you have upgraded them. I wish debian did that.

Maybe because the Pale Moon Downloads page says this?
Pale Moon portable has been specifically designed to take with you on removable media with high wear and slow access, and its default settings reflect this. Using it on a stationary computer has a number of drawbacks and is not recommended.

The only safe way is to back up your profile folder before an upgrade (do it while the browser isn't running) so that you can restore it and use it with the older version. Profiles aren't guaranteed to be backward compatible once upgraded.

It's not a big issue for testing, at all. It's just considerably less than optimal for daily use on a desktop unless you make changes to its settings.

Good suggestion about using the portable prior version of Pale Moon. But if the prior version is better for me, I still need to know how to revert the installed version. Please comment on my procedure in the opening post.

@moonbat - thanks for the warning. I always backup my profile when Pale Moon is closed.
