how to on 2K display?

Unread post by asik12 » 2021-09-22, 15:25

Hi, as of 2 hours I'm proud owner of HP's 2K 27" monitor vs 2X19".
I managed with WinaeroTweaker to set few win10 tiny fonts issues but what about Pale Moon?
The address bar is tiny as well as all the other top bars.
Can you direct me to a proper setting?

Thank you.

If you want to use a 2k display on a small size screen then you'll have to set your system scaling higher if it's too small.
Pale Moon and other software will pick up those system settings for device pixels automatically (that is, if you haven't forced it to a specific value in about:config).

I set win scaling to 125% and things are improving.
What value to look for in about:config ?

thank you

layout.css.devPixelsPerPx
a value of -1.0 means "auto, follow system dpi"
If you input a positive value, it will scale device pixels manually, e.g. 1.5 = 150%

Thanks very much Moonchild,

Didn't know about that Preference. A very useful one to know IMHO. :D

Tweaking the 'layout.css.devPixelsPerPx' Pref to 1.25 returns Pale Moon's toolbars to a 'Goldilocks' size for me on a Win10 HD 1920 x 1080 laptop screen. :)

Obviously this is all a matter of personal taste in relation to the screen scale percentage you have set in Windows' 'Display Settings' or 'Display Resolution' (right-click option on Windows desktop) to begin with.

Can now match the toolbar size I'd become accustomed to after years using Pale Moon on an old Win7 1366 x 768 laptop screen.

Also allows you to fiddle with a 'Custom Scale Factor' in Windows Display Settings... and then adjust Pale Moon sizing to suit.

My experience is that setting the Windows Settings scaling number to > 100% reduces the monitor's resolution, thereby defeating the purpose of switching to a higher-resolution monitor. Reducing the scaling to 100% put my monitor back at 1920x1080, but there wasn't much of a noticeable difference. My monitor's 21.5 inches, if that makes some kind of difference. I've read comments from people that getting a 2K/4K monitor was great and that it was a mistake. Guess that narrows down the range of possible outcomes. If the OP had "tiny" results with 2K, 4K must be downright invisible.

It will be if you keep to the same physical size. Well, not invisible but at least too small to properly see.

No, it doesn't. I think what you mean is that it reduces the monitor's real estate, as in you can display less content in the same space. By your reasoning if you scale < 100% it would increase the monitor's resolution? :)

What's important for things to be usable by a user is the proportion between how small items can comfortably be for them (in a physical sense) and the pixel density (pixels per inch/cm).
size = (zoom * pixels) / density
If you want to keep the physical displayed size the same, and your density increases while the pixel size stays the same (which it does for the same content on the screen), then your zoom factor must also increase.

If I go to browserleaks.com and click on "</> JavaScript" it takes me to a screen that shows my "Screen Resolution." When I had scaling > 100%, the number was less than 1920x1080. With 100% scaling it's 1920x1080. Exactly what am I supposed to make of this information? Thanks.

That screen resolution is what is being reported by the browser, not the real screen dimensions.
If the browser has less space to expand itself because the zoom factor is higher, it will obviously report a smaller screen estate.

I set the interface fonts to the size and type I wanted with code in a userChrome.css file.

Code: Select all

/*Global UI font*/
 * {font-family: Trebuchet MS !important;
font-size: 15px !important;
}

Correct, by simply CTRL+wheel you can see that report changes.

Thanks to vannilla and asik12. Moonchild also.

Basically, this stuff is beyond me. Not much is "obviously" to me except the text is bigger or smaller.

This first screenprint is the browserleaks page in question in my native 1920x1080 resolution.
Screenshot 2021-09-27 100727.png
This screenprint is the same page in 4K resolution. Is this what I would be seeing on a 4K monitor without any scaling alterations, by whatever means?
Screenshot 2021-09-27 100537.png
Also, using the Ctrl+scroll wheel didn't seem to change everything; for example, my Documents folder stayed the same size.

Finally, is using Ctrl+scroll wheel the same as changing the scaling factor in Windows Settings?

Thanks again.
