Palemoon 29 update broke things

Unread post by markd89 » 2021-02-02, 23:09

Hi,

I know how to do a proper issue report and so acknowledge that this one is sucky. Still, I'll describe what I know and perhaps it will be helpful anyway.

I'm running Palemoon under Debian. I use the auto-updater which works nicely. All is stable and has been for years now.

After the upgrade from 28.17.0 to 29.0, when Palemoon opened, no browser tabs were available. I use TreeStyle Tab to get a vertical stack on the left and that was blank. Manually typing in a url did not return a page.

I'm using PM all day, so I restored a backup rather than troubleshooting further.

I can repeat the upgrade and do more diagnostics if that would help.

Thanks,
Mark

You could check the error console and see if there are any errors there.
The error console is not the one you open pressing F12, so make sure you are actually using the right one.

Hi,

Is this the error console I should use? https://github.com/JustOff/error-console2-pm/releases

Thanks,
Mark

Are you using https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/treestyletabforpm/ ?
If so, try contacting the dev of that extension for an update. There has been plenty of time available for them to ensure compatibility with v29 (the unstable channel has been on v29 alpha for many months) so there's no real excuse for not testing and fixing it.

Thanks!

Yes, using that. There's already an issue open on github. I chimed in there. Looks like that is the cause of the behavior.

Hopefully we'll see a fix soon as I like to keep PM current.

Hi,

Is this the error console I should use?
No, there's a built-in entry to open it under the Tools menu.

Well. Treestyletab seems to be somewhat abandoned, on Github not activity since 2018 ....

Since I *really* can't live without it, I downloaded the source and had a look at it. I did a quick and dirty fix of replacing the 5 instance of appversion >=29-something to >=30-something in chrome.manifest, and it seems to work for me for now. If something really *IS* broken I won't be able do to much good, though....

Of course I also don't have any idea if it will cause my fridge to catch fire tomorrow, but that's a risk I will have to take.

In case anyone would like to give it a try:

To prevent broken browsers I've also blocked this extension (version 0.0.5 and below) while the dev is looking into it.
Please do not post edited extensions on the forum and have some patience.

Tab Utilities Phoenix works well as an alternative to TreeStyleTabs, in most cases...

Forked extensions :
● Add-ons Inspector ● Auto Text Link ● Copy As Plain Text ● Copy Hyperlink Text ● FireFTP button replacement ● gSearch Bar ● Navigation Bar Enhancer ● New Tab Links ● Number Tabs ● Print Preview Button and Keyboard Shortcut 2 ● Scrollbar Search Marker ● Simple Marker ● Tabs To Portfolio ● Update Alert ● Web Developer's Toolbox ● Zap Anything

Hint: If you expect a reply to your PM, allow replies...

Thank you.. FYI, there is a fork being somewhat developed here: https://github.com/oinkin/treestyletab/ ... -773088504

I'll post a message on github and point him to yours. Better if you both work together :-)

So we need to add this to the blocklist because no one wants to do things properly

I'm a user, not one of the extensions devs. Oinkin seemed willing to work on the extension. We're only a few days in, so maybe best to let him try for a while. Moonchild had posted he was going to block the extension for now.

I'd like a clean solution, but as a user, I like to leave open the option to use a hack if there isn't one. We may still get a clean solution.

FYI, oinkin released an update to fix Pale Moon 29 compatibility.

I installed it through the Extensions update capability of PM, then updated to PM 29 and all is well!
