Unread post by diode84 » 2020-12-04, 18:03

Hello
I am running Xenialpup64_7.5 and have Pale Moon 27.6.1. There is no facility to update it so how do I update.

I would download the tarball from the PM official site, and extract the folder "palemoon" to wherever you have the current "palemoon" folder. (I would delete the old folder first, then extract the new to the same path.)

Before you do this, maybe somebody else has got a better way. "How did you first install Pale Moon"? would be a pertinent question to answer.

Do you know where the folder "palemoon" is located? I'd look in /opt first.

;) You can do it yourself quite easily. Just download the 64-bit tar.bz2 for Pale Moon 28.16.0 fron the Pale Moon Linux site, then extract the entire contents into an empty directory. Then, examine your existing installation of Pale Moon over in your /opt directory AND check for any "supplementary" files for Pale Moon that could be located elsewhere (icons, desktop files, etc.). You just might need to update them as well. Then, simply REPLACE all of that with your new (and better) Pale Moon by DELETING your old Pale Moon installation - completely. (If you're a bit nervous about it, you can simply MOVE all of your old stuff into a different empty directory and save it - just in case). Just be very careful to use the EXACT same layout (directories, paths, etc.) that your old Pale Moon is using, and everything should be OK.

Okay, here's how I would do it. Go into your /opt folder as administrator (on my system I need to do this as administrator, I assume yours would work the same way). Rename the old "palemoon" to something else, such as palemoon1, or whatever. (That way if something becomes borked, you can go back to the old version in the meantime.) Then extract the new "palemoon" folder into the /opt folder. Open Pale Moon as you usually do and now you should be running the new version. If everything runs okay, you can then delete the old folder that you renamed palemoon1.
