Your Search Engine website is down.

Unread post by ulrichburke » 2020-08-25, 10:10

Dear Palemoon.

Tried to change my search engine to Google and had to use 'get more search engines' to get Google because it's not listed for some reason (why miss out the biggest search engine? I dunno! I don't like DuckDuckGo, it never finds ANYTHING useful! And you got Bing, so why not Google?)

Anyway, got taken HERE....

https://addons.palemoon.org/?component= ... rchplugins

Which as you can see is a 404-type page with nothing on it!

Just thought you ought to know it's not working. AS it's not working - how do I get Google to be my search engine on this thing?

Yours puzzledly

Chris.

Works just fine here. Is your Pale Moon up-to-date?
Off-topic:
As to why Google isn't included in the default list of engines: that has everything to do with how Google has actively tried to financially undermine this project.

The page works fine for me; All the SE plug-ins showing up listed. No 404 error...you must have something else messed up in your browser
and or setup, maybe an extension or an AVP blocking.
Perhaps you might need to do some problem solving to track your issue like disabling extensions etc.
Also would be of help to include your setup specs and other info; see here: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=49

I also can't access addons.palemoon.org as of yesterday, but I'm using MyPal (PM fork for XP). Fork blocked or something else? It has the same user agent as PM.

It works fine for me too.

I really think you should at least give Bing a shot, though. It's probably the most full-featured alternative. Google is awful, in my opinion, because you get absolutely nothing for using it. DuckDuckGo gives you privacy. Bing gives you rewards points that you can put towards a gift card in exchange for your data. But with Google? They take your data and you get nothing.

If you really want Google results though, you could try using the Startpage.com plugin. I think they give you Google results without you having to share all your data with Google. I don't think they're quite as privacy-oriented as DDG, but it's still a little better than using Google directly.

You would have to ask for support from MyPal's maintainers. To the best of my knowledge, we don't support Windows XP, or any other unofficial builds.

FTR, the Add-ons Site search engine page loads fine for me as well.

As an alternative though, try the Mycroft Project.

I'm curious what version of PM you use, that you're only now aware of this.
It was removed four years ago, starting with PM 26.4.

Since it was raised in the discussion, are you barring Mypal from being able to access the site?

At this time, I'm using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 28.12.0 running in 64 bit linux Mint 20 (Ulyana) Xfce.

1. Open about:config
2. Right click - New - String
3. name: general.useragent.override.addons.palemoon.org
4. value: Chrome

It works now.

Any what UA have you used before?
Also site-specific for that page?

Normally, there is no need to change the general User Agent and there is also no need to set a special UA for Pale Moon websites.

I didn't use any site-specific UA for addons.palemoon.org, why should I.

Obviously, someone is forcing us now to use one.

Wrong.
I don't use a site-specific UA for addons.palemoon.org and can properly access it.
What default UA you're using?

Read the thread again. On my Windows 7 I'm using Pale Moon and I can access addons.palemoon.org, but on my XP I'm using Mypal and I can't access it without changing the UA.

Doesn't work anymore. All browsers except Pale Moon are barred.

Try searching directly from the Add-ons Manager.

Search Plugins and any other non-xpi based listings (including externals) can't be delivered through the Add-ons Manager directly.

That's not accurate. I just now accessed APMO with user agents for Chrome, IE 11, and for SeaMonkey.

What did appear to be barred, at lease on my W7 machine, are browsers with user agents that advertise a Windows OS earlier than Windows 7 (didn't try a Linux UA). In addition, the browser seemed to be barred if its user agent contained the word "Mypal", regardless of the advertised OS.
