Pale Moon 28.10.0 crashes

Unread post by Shooze » 2020-07-09, 06:43

Hallo,

the new version always crashes when trying to display a menu, either by clicking the right mouse button or by selecting one of the entries in the menu bar.

palemoon --safe-mode

I cannot get linux Pale Moon to crash either by clicking on the right mouse button or selecting any entry in the Menu Bar. Everything is working as it should. The only theme I'm using for linux Pale Moon is: Past Modern Revisited (2.7.1).

At this time, I'm using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 28.10.0 running in 64 bit linux Mint 20 (Ulyana) Xfce.
Linux Mint 21.3 (Virginia) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox
MX Linux 23.2 (Libretto) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox
Linux Debian 12.5 (Bookworm) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox

Most likely it's the issue the distro you are using. Did you upgrade it or any packages on it recently? Can you confirm the previous versions of the browser do not crash?

Pale Moon on Linux here. Sparky Linux Rolling with MATE Desktop. Have never had even a single crash of Pale Moon there.

p/s: I compiled my own version of Pale Moon. Don't know if you are using the official tarball or compiled yourselves?

I'm using the automatical update process of Pale Moon itself on an openSuse 15.1 (64 bit) system with xfce desktop.
The previous version (28.9.2) works, including some AddOns (uBlock, uMatrix, ...) and the german language package.

On my computer at work (RedHat 7.x) the new version works fine too.

I had the same problem last December with the version 28.8.0, I kept the previous version until 28.8.1 came out which worked fine again.

Thanks.

Might be useful to know the full list of your addons.
Please post the troubleshooting informations as explained in one of the stickied threads.

- I tried the new version 28.11, it crashes in the same way.
- I installed Pale Moon directly from the tar ball and removed my user profile ($HOME/.moonchild productions) - still crashing.

- I called palemoon with strace in the hope to identify something in the logfile - it doesn't crash, but the menues are displayed with
a transparent background, only the characters are visible.

Attached the Troubleshooting output (from the last working version 28.9.2)

Thanks.

What happens if you use 28.11 with a different desktop environment/window manager?
Also what environment are you using right now?

Everything work on my office computer (RedHat, Xfce 4.12).

> Also what environment are you using right now?

openSuse 15.1, Xfce 4.12
No other desktop/window manager is installed.
(I will not install Gnome or KDE just to run the browser...)

PM's always run fine for me in XFCE over that past few years on a Debian base. i wouldn't think it's the DE.

Because the issue is with X, I thought it could've been something related to it, i.e. the DE or window manager.
However since it happens with XFCE my hypotesis doesn't really hold, since for many XFCE works fine.

The default theme of Pale moon is incompatible with the "oxygen-gtk" theme.
I changed the xfce theme to another theme (clearlooks) and no crash happened.
Then I changed the pale moon theme to the Noia Moon theme, switched the xfce theme back to
oxygen-gtk and still no crash.

Thanks for your help.

oxygen-gtk should have been patched to include Pale Moon on the exception list for special handling that is needed for Mozilla-based applications (working around an engine bug). So whatever you're using still has an old and unpatched version of the oxygen-gtk theme then! Might want to see if system libs are being maintained properly on your distro.
