FYI, archive.org has archived various v27 and v26 versions of Pale Moon

Unread post by __NM64__ » 2020-07-15, 01:14

While trying to find archived versions of Pale Moon from v27 and v26 (the two versions missing from the website), I just discovered today that archive.org has in fact archived several versions of v27 and v26 of Pale Moon which is notable as those are the versions missing on the Pale Moon website in terms of "archived versions".

However they're not all in one place, rather what archive.org has is the actual web pages and downloads from when those versions were new.

For example, here's v27.9.4 portable:
https://web.archive.org/web/20180721130 ... able.shtml

And here's v27.4.2.1 portable:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170901154 ... able.shtml

As well as v27.2.0 portable:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170319043 ... able.shtml

And even v26.5.0 portable (though only "Pale Moon mirror #1 EU" was archived, though it still has both 32bit and 64bit; it even archived the download for the Atom/WinXP version):
https://web.archive.org/web/20161119165 ... able.shtml

However, once you start getting back into 2016 and v26 you start getting download links that weren't archived. For example, none of the downloads for v26.3.3 portable were archived:
https://web.archive.org/web/20160809181 ... able.shtml

...though it did archive the installer for specifically 64bit v26.3.3 (again though, only mirror #1 EU):
https://web.archive.org/web/20160802231 ... in64.shtml

And in the process of seeing FileHorse listed, I just realized that FileHorse still has a bajillion old versions of non-portable Pale Moon:
32bit: https://www.filehorse.com/download-pale ... -versions/
64bit: https://www.filehorse.com/download-pale ... -versions/

The hell is your point? Also, why do you want to download and use old and insecure versions of Pale Moon?

Why shouldn't they be available? Doesn't mean people should use them or that they are supported.
If you insist you can download and use an archaic version of most free software. Doesn't mean you should, outside of nostalgic, curiosity, educational or similar motives.

As for archive.org keeping some versions but not necessarily organized: so what?

They're available so website and addon developers can go back and check new code against old versions, either to maintain backward compatibility, or (for addon developers) choose the right minimum version.

In particular, there was a bug or something that started occurring with "NoSquint" back with Pale Moon v27, but I was previously unable to source the exact versions where the bug last didn't occur and where it first did occur:
Myself @ NoSquint's GitHub wrote:The last version of Pale Moon where this bug did not occur was Pale Moon v27.0.3, and the bug was first introduced in Pale Moon v27.1.0. This bug affects both the most recent forked NoSquint v2.2.2 as well as the old abandoned original NoSquint v2.1.9.
Extension author @ NoSquint's GitHub wrote:I tried to locate the portable versions of 27.0.3 and 27.1.0 to confirm this but couldn't find them here. Installers seem available on Filehippo/puma/horse but I'd rather avoid that for now.
Unfortunately no portable copy of v27.0.3 was archived, but I can now at least link them to portable copies of v26.5.0 and v27.1.0.

thank you very much __NM64__ for the links. Very helpful with a problem I'm having retrieving data from an old version. This way I can carefully install progressively newer versions until the data is completely retrieved :D
