28.9.0 Not Offering Website Login Prompt

Unread post by LAR Grizzly » 2020-03-24, 18:17

I just noticed that PM no longer offers stored login info when logging into websites. When attempting to log in to a site that I have stored login info, I get no prompt from the password manager. Also, I notice that my search suggestions have disappeared from search boxes on sites that I frequent (such as this forum).

It's checked. I went back to Pale Moon 28.8.4 and everything is working as it used to. I'll wait for the point release to see if the problem arises again. If it doesn't, I'll close this as fixed.

Since this was a major release, there may be a few bugs to be worked out. I'm sure Moonchild is working hard to get things straightened out. I'll be patient and wait for the next release.

I experienced that a while ago when i switched to the 29.0 unstable. Happened not with a new profile, so i tried to edit in my profile folder the file "prefs.js" - with deleting/restoring various entries to see if i could solve my issue that way.

In my case it was the fault of that 2 entries here which i deleted, afterwards the password filling function appeared again.

Not sure if that also will help you, but just in case, quit the browser - go to your profile folder - open "prefs.js" with a text editor and look if you have one of that lines like that inside:

user_pref("layers.acceleration.disabled", true);
user_pref("layers.prefer-d3d9", true);

If yes, delete the one you have, save the file and start your browser again and see if something has changed.

Thanks for the tip. If I run into this problem in the next point release, it will give me a place to start my troubleshooting. Kudos! ;)

It appears that the preference user_pref("layers.acceleration.disabled", true); is what was causing the problem. I updated to PM 28.9.0.1 and the problem was still there. I edited out the preference in my prefs.js file and now PM is working as expected. Many thanks to Sajadi for the tip. I never would have found it without your help.

If that's the problem then the browser -is- offering passwords but you aren't seeing the password selection popup. Weird error if so.

Thanks for that workaround Sajadi ! :D
Had the same problem with my updated PM install version and/or the rather old profile on Win7-32.

BTW, I just noticed that the YT banner/old layout issue has disappeared now for 28.9.0.1, after I applied Sajadis advice, not with the update alone, like LAR Grizzly mentioned above. Coincidence?
My knowledge with config files isn't so good, so I normally keep away from fiddling with all those files and I don't want to spread false recommendations here, but the YT issue is gone since this single change.
In case of complete BS pls reply and I'll edit this out. ;)

I can confirm exactly this. It also caused web.whatsapp.com not to work even with the proper useragent override. Only after removing that line from prefs.js file WhatsApp started to work and passwords were autofilled again.

So why didn't you report it on GitHub as a regression while on unstable, so it didn't ride the trains to release causing these problems for a lot more people actually using the browser?...
That's the whole point of people using the unstable channel, you know.

I'm also surprised people have this pref leftover because we clear it in our profile migration in the browser after converting it to the new version. Why did that not happen?

Maybe it comes from the addon Pale Moon Commander? I only had "user_pref("layers.acceleration.disabled", true);" left in it. "user_pref("layers.prefer-d3d9", true);" was not in my prefs.js.

It should still have been cleared. Pale Moon Commander might need an update for this but it won't "stick" anything that's removed otherwise.

I've created tracking issue Issue #1495 (UXP) for this, but so far haven't been able to find any left-over use of this pref. I'll keep searching. Help appreciated.

My personal rig has the update but I haven't checked the prefs file there yet. Can do that later today. My laptop and maybe the PC from my mother do not have the update yet. Let me know how I can try and help you with this setup/situation.

If it helps any at all I had the problem and, after restoring disabled Pale Moon Commander and ran the update again.

Updating from that point worked fine, all passwords showing up.

I don't have Pale Moon Commander installed, but the old pref was present for me. It seems specific to having disabled hardware acceleration under the old pref.
