I have discord
Please consider abandoning that and using IRC instead.
Gee thanks. Never knew IRC supported voice chat.

Do you know how much of a logistics nightmare it'd be to get my friends to stop using discord?

Why do they intentionally choose Discord over other options?

The size of a generation has shrunk to about 15 years. Within the last 15, every kid that got onto the net has been trained to be an obedient little corporate serf, dependent on proprietary technology services, valuing convenience over privacy or depending on a proprietary network. Add to that smartphones replacing desktop/laptop in terms of accessing the net - they are by definition far more locked down than a regular computer. So even though we have IRC for multiway chat, XMPP for one on one or limited group chat, SIP (for voice), none of these have caught on and nobody offers them as a viable alternative (suitably dummified for the masses, as could be done with SIP).

@ user88818

I do a lot of research on my main hobby which is standup paddleboarding (sup). Below is a screenshot of a YouTube video, with the new interface, Dark Theme and the video is showing a (tan colored) Blue Planet 10'2" x 32" x 4.5" @ 181 liters sup surfing some waves. The title of the video shows, length of time of the video, the control buttons, etc.

You can see other videos on the right side of the page with the titles of their videos, length of time for the video, etc.

Because the update wasn't just a fix, it also changed YT's behavior.

Also, people are veering off in many different directions like discord vs. IRC and such WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS TOPIC.
Please either stay on topic or move to the Off-topic chat board if you want to continue to discuss those kinds of things not directly related to YouTube.

Other than disabling the defaulting to the old layout, what does this update do?

Because THEY don't know how IRC works.

Listen, I'm sorry I don't use your platform of choice but thats just the way shit is.

Sorry Moonchild, It's just when you get suddenly slammed for using a certain platform you can get carried away, I'll stop.

As far as Discord is conserned.. Why don't you JUST use their standalone chromerunner client? It is soley designed to be run on Chrome. Period. I don't even know what you would get by running it on Pale Moon (which is two words btw) as it doesn't have WebRTC.

Discord Web loads instantly. The Discord client takes three years.

Besides, I haven't used it much but If I'm not mistaken the client uses much more system resources. Probably wrong though as I barely use it.

Also, my bad for spelling the browser's name wrong. God forbid.

So... About Palemoon and Palemoon's relation with Youtube... I think someone mentioned some bits earlier about some 'possible optimization' in the future that could- maybe- be done to make Palemoon's navigation faster on that website ?

I'm not exactly ''programming savvy'', so I can only suppose that's something that can be done, but not sure of the amount of work(and time) involved in term of Palemoon coding and stuff ?

See, it's because it's not an isolated incident and people keep doing it all the time that we get to be annoyed by it and start correcting people about it.
A 2-word name for a piece of software isn't strange, and people do it right everywhere else, so why not for Pale Moon?
"Internet Explorer" is two words too. It's not Internetexplorer. Firefox is one word, and you don't see people consistently writing Fire Fox, either. All we're asking is that people PLEASE stop misspelling it all the time.
It's 2 words. Capitalized. Not oneword not hyphenated-words not anything else. Oh and while you're at it stop 2-wording my name, that IS one word with one capital, Moonchild. Not Moon Child or MoonChild or what not.

Thanks in advance.

Right, so what does it do aside from disabling the defaulting to the old layout? I get that it now defaults to the current layout, but that's the same thing as not defaulting to the old layout, right?

Right, so what does it do...
It's not really that complicated. Previously, the default YouTube layout (for Pale Moon) was the OLD one. Now, the default is the NEW one. That's all there is.

Pale Moon is not doing any background changes to YouTube, it just "masks"/names/announces itself slightly differently, so that the dumb YouTube mechanism will present to the user either the new or the old layout. From now on, it will be the NEW layout.

Omg, new YouTube layout is dramatically slow on PM with my Core i5 3,5 GHz 4-core CPU and full DX11 HW acceleration!
Google, what the crap are you smoking there? It will absolutely unusable on PM if it'll kept the way like this now...

Happily, found that on PM v28.8.2.1 just clearing "general.useragent.override.youtube.com" setting to empty line backs old layout :).
I just blocked annoying yellow banner with uBlock, and everything's good. Hell with it. Judging this topic, people really "like" new design...

I also experienced that in Seamonkey about 1 year ago, it was a Pentium D 965 clocked at 4.4GHz.
My Ryzen can run the new design well, but I'll see how the Pentium 4 does.

Here they are. The auto quality one is optional but you can modify it to whatever you wish I think. I have it at 480p for bandwidth reasons.
Thank you! The Autoplay disable works fine. As for manually setting a default video quality, I think it's lines 14-15 in the script. For example, if someone wants 1080p as default, line 15 should change from the current 480p:

const QUALITY_LARGE = QUALITIES[8];

to

const QUALITY_LARGE = QUALITIES[5];

...Probably. Haven't tested much. Seems to work after a quick test.

Seems to be working reasonably well on my vintage Core2Quad... check your extensions/scripts for possible interference. It is indeed slower than the old layout though.

Polymer is a mess. v1 especially. Though, I don't expect Polymer v2 to be much better when we get the Google WebComponents (ShadowDOM and CustomElements v1) but who knows.

Be glad we have SSUAOs but I don't expect the Material design to remain functional forever it may go away like the previous version before Material. I think PART of the problem with Polymer v1 is it is emulating what Polymer v2 does with those bastardizations that have to be baked into browsers.

Dunno why they can't just have a regular site with maybe a little ajax. Fuckin' Google.

This was exactly the reason why we opted to massage YT into presenting us with the old layout when it was first introduced. CPU usage due to scripting is high, and the design is overall slow on anything but Blink.
Since that is no longer an option as the old layout will go away, you'll just have to live with the tar for now. It might be better in v29 when we can hopefully allow v2 of the new interface, but it'll still be 'polymer" and will still simply not be optimal. Also, expect in that iteration even fewer "downloaders" to work because it'll be hiding parts of the document structure.
