Slowing down

I've been a daily full time Pale Moon user about 4 or 5 years and I have noticed that the browser gets really slow over the course of a day or so, especially with 60fps video trying to play (I think it is my video card). But the last upgrade to 28.8.0 made the problem much worse and significantly slowed the browser even from start-up. It now happens within a matter of a couple hours. It becomes unresponsive and can take a minute or more to respond to a mouse click in the active tab. I also noticed that if you grant permission to a web page to run scripts, that will slow it down a lot, even if you then revoke the permissions. The only time I grant the permission is when a site simply doesn't work without JS.

I tend to have a lot of open, but inactive tabs. By inactive, I mean restored from the last session, but not re-load, effectively a short-term book mark. When the browser becomes unuseably slow, I kill palemoon.exe, restore previous session and then go back to the one tab I was working on while all the others remain unloaded until they are viewed. I am assuming they are not really taking up much resources as they are not loaded.

Is there anything I can do short of killing the browser to restore it back to that state without actually killing it? It tends to happen during live-streams on YT and it becomes difficult to find the exact spot I left off.

Also, I'm not bitching to the community about it being slow, I just thought you would want to know and also if there is anything I can do about it.

Step one before commenting on any forum for the first time is to look at the rules and conventions followed, this applies to any online community. We can't figure out what's wrong sans troubleshooting information - this post is stickied on top of the general support forum.

I thought Privacy Badger was incompatible as well; was it updated to be compatible with Pale Moon again? This might also be problematic if not.

I see no reason to use noscript and privacy badger together when UBO covers both bases on it's own and noscript is more trouble than it's worth.

What is UBO? I searched on the pail moon extension site for UBO but it doesn't bring anything up.

Yeah, it's an old PC. Core 2 quad isn't that bad, but the video card SUX. Worse, the case is such that I can't upgrade the card. The computer does what I need it to do and I don't have to deal with Windows 10 and all the stuff it breaks. The longer I can hold on to this machine the better.

Ublock Origin - you need the legacy version of this extension, install it from here.

NoScript is known to break Pale Moon and thus is not supported.
Use eMatrix instead (a Pale Moon fork of Umatrix, also made by the author of Ublock)

I removed the offending no-script and privacy badger and installed ublock origin and a cookie blocker (that doesn't work) from the palemoon add-ons site and the problem actually got worse (which might be because my computer is now running dozens of scripts it wasn't running before).

I have had this problem before with major updates and then it got a bit better with the minor updates (it's just worse this time).

If I could get a 1/2 height card, would upgrading the video card help? Somebody mentioned the video driver being old earlier in the thread. The 1/2 height card really limits the video card I can get. Worse, the MB is backwards and won't fit properly in standard case so that the slots would be where they should be.

Even if you removed NoScript, the "removed" extension can still cause issues.
Make a new profile and delete the current one.
If you can update the video driver (not necessarily the hardware) do it regardless.

No need to suggest such drastic measures; you do not need to delete your old profile to get rid of NoScript. See here.

In most cases, the only way to get back to a sane working condition is:
Complete remove NoScript from the browser
Clear your cookies (Options -> Privacy -> Remove individual cookies -> Clear all cookies)
Empty your cache (Options -> Advanced -> Network -> "Clear now" button under "Cached web content")
Restart the browser

I do recommend trying Pale Moon with a new, temporary profile to see if the situation improves, as there could be other issues with the current profile that might cause slowdowns.

the last upgrade to 28.8.0 made the problem much worse and significantly slowed the browser even from start-up. It now happens within a matter of a couple hours. It becomes unresponsive and can take a minute or more to respond to a mouse click in the active tab.

I'd make a copy of your existing Profile & open that (copy) Profile in the portable version of PM (the version prior to 28.8.0 where you say you were less affected) to see if the issue is also (now) present there.

If it is, that may point out a general Profile issue rather then the update to 28.8.0 itself.

(Testing in a new, clean Profile, possibly with the only addition being something like uBlock Origin, may also help to point something out - & be easier to accomplish.)

Look for updated (video) drivers (or at least newer then what you may happen to be running).
Might help.
I used to have the odd (browser) crash, & it was suggested I update my video drivers.
But I put it off (& off & ...) thinking, oh, nothing special with my system, video... what do I need "newer" drivers for?
Anyhow, once I did actually put the newer drivers in, my odd crashes subsided.
(That said, an older system, meager graphics, can only do so much.)
