Any way to install firefox personas theme?

Post by Nicholas_Yeo » 2019-11-03, 17:29

Hey guys, I'm a new PM Browser user just off from using Firefox, I can easily found addon alternatives at PM addon site, it's really convenient, but when I was looking for themes I realised I can't use those persona themes available from Firefox AMO any more, I installed 'theme tool' trying to make my own but there's only solid colour theme, when I clicked 'get more themes' it redirected to Firefox AMO which those are the themes I can't install on Palemoon, are there anyway to use them any more? I still have Firefox profiles, can I get the files(persona image) and make it on Palemoon?

No it's not possible to use them in Pale Moon, because they are webextensions.

See here and here (2nd link requires logging in).

Thanks for the reply man... seems like not everything can go off smoothly but I guess it's worth to trade it with XUL extensions
Thanks

Pale Moon has its own fully customized themes that completely change the look of the browser - the way Firefox once did. The old style personas that Firefox introduced (i.e. not Webextensions) are also supported, with a few available. Mozilla very nicely decided to completely remove their original personas site, so unless someone has a backup, the ones at this link are all that are available at the moment.

I never looked at the personas before. That Classic Pale Moon persona is gorgeous. Switched from Aero Moon.

They finally removed them all. Another genius moment.

I still have my old 6-7 personas installed and they work. If I got this correctly, these personas do not actually contain any images, but provide to the browser a link to them so they can be loaded. Trying to switch personas while disconnected from the internet kind of confirms this.

So, if Mozilla removed them how come they work? I can still find my old personas listed in AMO. Perhaps they've kept the images intact where they were and "only" changed the 'delivery format'?

Example: Blade Runner - Cityscape

I have this backed up with FEBE (along with the rest) and the entire "code" of the .json backup file is this one line:

Code: Select all

[{"id":"482832","name":"Blade Runner - Cityscape","headerURL":"https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addons/482832/header.png?1394783247","footerURL":"https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addons/482832/footer.png?1394783247","textcolor":"#f5f5f5","accentcolor":"#041042","iconURL":"https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addons/482832/icon.png?1394783247","previewURL":"https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addons/482832/preview.png?1394783247","author":"rmatthendrick","description":"Blade Runner - Part of the opening sequence for the science fiction movie Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford.","updateURL":"https://versioncheck.addons.mozilla.org/en-US/themes/update-check/482832","version":"1.0"}]
Perhaps it wouldn't be hard to convert any currently available "WebExtension Persona" to our format?

The links above still work, the files are still there on Mozilla's CDN. Except that you'd have to know the ID of the persona to get it. I tried looking on the Wayback Machine for the original getpersonas.com, but the snapshot of the site is broken. I guess it should be possible to translate them.

It would also be good if we could submit the regular type of personas in addition to full themes. I miss some of the old ones like Japanese tattoo and Darkfox.

Correct, I've done it for a few, it doesn't take very long.

Could you post a guide in the Tutorials/How-to subforum?

I could, but just about everything you need can already be found on the developer wiki here. I haven't tried the bootstrap method, but if you grab the image from a new-style Firefox persona (they generally have only one, although Pale Moon can use a second for the status and find bars) and go off the JS on the wiki (thanks Tobin!), it's pretty easy to create a page you can load personas from. The add-ons site page you linked is a good example implementation, and if you inspect it you can see some other stuff you can do in the data-browsertheme attribute on each persona's anchor tag. I don't want to share the page I've made because I didn't make the artwork in the themes there.

Oh, and this extension makes it really easy to see inside Firefox personas.

Installing one of these personas to Firefox, now downloads the image instead of linking it. It's in the 'extensions' folder in the FF profile, inside the .xpi file. However: only the header image is downloaded since the new FF only uses that. Footer images still online. Grab 'em while you can...

An example that contains different header/footer images:

Commodore professional

Code: Select all

[{"id":"339536","name":"Commodore professional","headerURL":"https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addons/339536/ff-Persona_Header.jpg?1318040913","footerURL":"https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addons/339536/ff-Persona_Footer.jpg?1318040913","textcolor":"#000000","accentcolor":"#ff7700","iconURL":"https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addons/339536/preview_small.jpg?1318040913","previewURL":"https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addons/339536/preview_large.jpg?1318040913","author":"h3nkstar","description":"Commodore professional Style","updateURL":"https://versioncheck.addons.mozilla.org/en-US/themes/update-check/339536","version":"1.0"}]
