PM v.28xx freezes

Unread post by PalleP » 2019-07-21, 19:44

My PM totally freezes when I try to rapidly open 10-15 tabs, and must be force terminated.
The longer PM has been running, the less new tabs will make PM choke.
This is not new, and has been so since I installed the first v.28, except maybe for one subversion, and this is absolutely not the first time I write about this problem.
Here are some basic info:
Win7 ultimate 32bit on a Dell XPS 420 with Intel Q9450 and 4GB RAM.
I have another very similar desktop that has exactly the same problem.
The desktops have a huge amount of programs installed and they all run perfect.
I have also tried to install other browsers (Iridium and Firefox) for test, and they both run perfect.
Running with extensions disabled does not help.
I also, some subversions ago, made a fresh install without getting rid of the problem.
Here is the requested troubleshooting info:

Just opened 23 new tabs a fast as I could right-click and alt-T them, on top of the 19 already open, and with 87 extensions enabled - no problems here. Same OS as OP.

Forked extensions :
● Add-ons Inspector ● Auto Text Link ● Copy As Plain Text ● Copy Hyperlink Text ● FireFTP button replacement ● gSearch Bar ● Navigation Bar Enhancer ● New Tab Links ● Number Tabs ● Print Preview Button and Keyboard Shortcut 2 ● Scrollbar Search Marker ● Simple Marker ● Tabs To Portfolio ● Update Alert ● Web Developer's Toolbox ● Zap Anything

Hint: If you expect a reply to your PM, allow replies...

You've disabled your memory cache (why??) and disabled restore-on-demand (click-to-restore). You can expect issues rapidly opening tabs and loading many sites in parallel in that case, because you are tasking the browser with full site loading for each tab. Especially problematic if those sites are making many 3rd-party connections each. You're simply flooding the network back-end with requests in that case, especially with not allowing it to cache things.

In addition, your hardware seems to be dated and you're using a video driver from 2014. Those are also factors that need to be taken into account.

Oh, and I can open 200 tabs. 8-)

That Radeon series likely was obsoleted by AMD already. It's likely a pre-GCN Radeon.

Just saying it factors in, whether something newer was available or not.

Just to be sure I checked the drivers available.
It has both classic drivers available in the v15 series (2015) and crimson betas from 2016. Nothing newer unfortunately.
Also, HD 64xx is a very much low-end AMD GPU, which won't help on top of its age.

Worse still if it's a DDR3 version, awful memory bandwidth: 8.5-12.8 GB (DDR3) or 25.6-28.8 GB/s (GDDR5).

I did these 2 changes last week to see if it made any diff. to the problem. It did not. I have now set them back to default.
Yes the video drivers are old, because the newer ATI drivers are crash prone. Remember that I have no other issues on my pc, also not with other browsers or graphics heavy applications.

I am convinced that you will find any reason to discount your aging hardware and specific software setup. I have had my fun but shall not be willing to further assist you.

Others may continue but that is their problem.

... How did you think that -disabling- cache is ever going to help performance...? (ever made the mistake back in the day of trying to install windows without smartdrv? it's comparable)

Sorry but the bottom line is: you're trying to do something your hardware doesn't support.
"But it worked in v27" is not an argument either, because v27 was a completely different milestone. I'm sorry if v28 doesn't work for your non-standard, very demanding workflow, but there's nothing actionable here for us. You'll have to either upgrade your hardware to something more in line with what a modern web browser demands, or adjust your workflow.
For the latter, I suggest you restore sessions by not loading content until the tab is selected, and not try to load 20 tabs concurrently; i.e.: take it at the pace your hardware can support. If you have an issue with that you are seeing stale content when loading tabs from a saved session, you may want to look into setting the pref browser.sessionstore.cache_behavior to the value of 1 to re-validate with on-line content.

I didn't think anything because I don't really understand the settings. I just tried something to see if it made any diff, and have written down what I changed so I could revert the settings.

I still find this very hard to believe, since other browsers can easily do the job. But since this fact is obviously not valid here it is probably best to end this tread here. This is not ment offensive, I just don't see any point in continue if such an argument is not valid.

Then you shouldn't touch them.
about:config is a very powerful tool, but with great power comes great responsibility, as the saying goes.

However when you reported your settings, they were not reverted. (and it wouldn't make much sense to report a situation you normally wouldn't be using, right?)

Then perhaps you should move away from Pale Moon as your browser and use a different browser that agrees more with your workflow on the >10 years old hardware you're using. As Tobin already alluded to, you're likely not going to accept that your aging hardware and specific software setup is the issue here, so if that's going to be the immutable factor here, you have but one option to deal with your discomfort: use a different browser that "easily does the job". As stated many times, I always think you should be using what works best for you. If that's not Pale Moon, then that's fine -- we can't cater to every specific software setup on every bit of hardware with every thinkable edge-case workflow out there and nor do we try to, since it's folly. If your particular situation is less than ideal and causes problems for you, then please find a better set of tools to use!

AMD seems to have stopped producing silent boards.
Will a GeForce GT 710 Silent Low Profile 1 or 2 GB do the job?

Slightly better, still choked by DDR3:
GT 710 Memory Specs:
1.8 Gbps Memory Clock
2 GB Standard Memory Config
DDR3 Memory Interface
Memory Interface Width: 64-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec): 14.4

The following boards seems to have DDR5 memory, are they better?

ASUS GT710-SL-1GD5
ASUS GT710-SL-1GD5-BRK
ASUS GT710-SL-2GD5
ASUS GT710-SL-2GD5-BRK

Sounds like AMD don't really care about Radeon HD 6xxx series users. In my experience, I had better luck with a more recent version of the Adrenalin drivers on my Radeon R9 280X.

They don't care at all. I have wasted an enormous amount of time on buggy ATI drivers in the past. They released the final driver for their HD series, it was extremely buggy and caused bsod, even the installer was buggy. They didn't bother to correct it. They just told the many users of the HD series: Ha, we fooled you, now go and buy our new wonderful series.
This is why I will not buy graphics adapters from AMD anymore and will try Nvidia. I have zero experience with Nvidia but know they have spyware in their drivers and it is advisable to use 3 party programs to prevent telemetry.
This is why I ask if the above mentioned boards will cause trouble and if they are likely to make my PM work correctly. Notice that I never do any gaming and therefore not want any fancy high end board.

There is no guarantee that those cards will work flawlessly, considering some people have complained about issues with Pale Moon on GT 7xx NV cards that required driver juggling to get solved, too.

Also, I'm not sure if tossing in a new video card will solve your problems. It will alleviate the compositor when trying to manage many sites at once, but... you're still using 10-year-old hardware otherwise for processing. That simply has its restrictions.

FTR, when I used my HD 6870 I regularly did not update the drivers, especially not if I didn't have any issue with the ones I was running, because the unified driver packages (you can blame NVidia for that trend, by the way) would regularly cater to newer cards but break older cards in the process. An older driver might work better for you especially if you aren't trying to do gaming with it (I doubt it, considering the 4 subseries is really low end and just made for basic desktop work)

Well, Nvidia screwed up, as some should know, IIRC, there is a dangerous vulnerability with drivers before version 430.64
