In the case of IDM, I guess the advantage would be the ease and reliability (due to updates) of downloading and/or grabbing from many websites (not just YouTube and including websites that require user login), multiple file handling/filtering/categorizing etc. The OP (benherrmann) mentioned convenience and speed. You should open a new thread if you want to generally discuss this topic btw, but there definitively still uses for a good download manager. Not as in the past, I agree, but they are still useful.
