More Windows Update Problems
More Windows Update Problems
Just a heads up, looks like there are serious problems with Microsoft's April batch of updates for Windows, especially if you're running Sophos or Avast AV. For once, Windows 10 is apparently not affected.

Re: More Windows Update Problems
I have read several different articles since yesterday saying Win 10 is also affected but in a different way. The article you linked says the same.

With Microsoft's current policy with their Cumulative and Quality updates on Patch Tuesday, Patch Tuesday should now be better known as, "Hope for the best.........but plan for the worst day".

Re: More Windows Update Problems
The increasing frequency of update problems looks to me as if microsoft can't keep track of the growing complexity of their software, different versions, compatibility in many directions, it seems they are loosing the battle.

Re: More Windows Update Problems
Yikes! That AskWoody.com article, reminds me of a very bad bug of 18 years ago or roughly that, with McAfee VirusScan 6.0, back in likely, the very-early-2000s, which would cause Windows 98 (and likely Windows 95) to freeze and I would be required to go to safe mode!

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you let your marketing team haphazardly throw together operating system without getting it fully vetted by an experienced QA team.

Re: More Windows Update Problems
I (foolishly) installed the Security-only KB (W7 SP1). This morning the icons were blank and everything frozen. 3 reboots got it going, read an article in Softpedia, uninstalled the KB. Don't yet know if there's any effect.

Re: More Windows Update Problems
The REAL answer to these sorts of problems (wonky updates, user error, malicious software, half baked M$ updates, and everything else known to man and god that's not good for your system, is to run Macrium.
This way, you don't have to spend hours researching a solution & hoping there's even a fix that is 100% effective. This latest M$ update screwed my machine so bad it wouldn't reboot properly. I got nothing but error messages about missing system files. Macrium gave me my stable system back in minutes.
Using Macrium, I can laugh at everything that goes wrong, because a fix back to a stable configuration is literally 2 minutes away !

Re: More Windows Update Problems
Once again, my approach to updates which is to leave them for a week or so, then apply them if there's no major issues seems to be the prudent approach. Blindly applying updates the moment they're released has become a bad idea thanks to the shoddy quality of MS's updates lately. It's another reason why I'm avoiding Windows 10 on my PC, and why I use Update Manager for Windows on my one Windows 10 laptop to wrestle control of the updates away from Microsoft...
