2018.11.04 File menu bar, address bar, blank window

Unread post by obsess5 » 2018-11-04, 19:08

Basilisk updated this morning to 64-bit 2018.11.04, Windows 7. I started the browser:
  • No flash of an "Updating ..." pop-up.
  • Got a blank title at the very top (usually has page title and "- Basilisk"), File-Edit-etc. menu bar, and an uncustomized address/search bar.
  • Below that was a white screen.
  • The File-Edit-etc. menus would drop down, but when I clicked on anything in the menus, nothing happened.
  • So clicking on File->Exit did nothing. Clicking on the window's red X button closed the window, but the/a Basilisk process was still running in the Task Manager. Not consuming any CPU, so it apparently wasn't caught in a loop.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, rebooting, ensuring no Basilisk process was running, and even tried the 32-bit version with the same result.

Since I saw guyfromkcmo was able to download the previous version, I tried again and downloaded and installed basilisk-20180927135115.win64.installer.exe -- everything works again!

(I say "tried again" because when I clicked on "the archive FTP server" link, Pale Moon simply gave me a "530 Login or password incorrect!" pop-up. I powered up Chrome -- yuk! -- and got an FTP login dialog pop-up. I vaguely remember anonymous FTP, so I entered "anonymous" and got the directory listing of the archive. Perhaps (i) fix Pale Moon to bring up the dialog and (ii) add login instructions to the Basilisk download page? Thank you!)

I've updated my own copy of basilisk the normal way with the internal updater without issues, so it's certainly not a generic issue affecting everyone or it would have been caught before publication.

It looks like the browser can't initialize properly.

This usually means that either something interfered with the updating process OR an extension in use is erroring out in such a way that it interrupts initialization. The former is more likely, preventing components from being updated properly (or worse: deleting components of the new version as they are installed)

Can you please tell us which antivirus solution you use and check your antivirus logs for anything automatically "quarantined" or "removed"?
Can you please list which extensions you have in use?

EDIT: I also corrected the incorrect FTP link on the website - thanks for letting me know.
Here is the correct link here also, in case someone lands here first: ftp://archive.palemoon.org/basilisk/

I just ran into this as well. Starting it up, I get a blank update window. None of the buttons on that window do anything. Clicking the red X closes it, and the main browser window opens, which is mostly blank and equally non-responsive. Going back to the 20180927130926 release fixes it for me as well. Downloading a fresh copy of the 11-4 release doesn't help. I went through and disabled (but didn't uninstall) every addon, browser is still unusable.

Can you please run basilisk from the command line with "-jsconsole" as a command line parameter and report any errors that pop up in the error console?

I ran that command, the console popped up but it had nothing logged to it, no errors, no messages. I ran it on the previous release and it did show a bunch of messages (I assume you aren't interested in those, but I can paste them if you want).

Can confirm Telanor's results using Basilisk 2018.11.04 on Win7. The error console did appear after using -jsconsole, but it showed nothing, nor did starting it on safe-mode or even deleting the profile folder.

It's a real headscratcher, then.

There has to be a common factor between everyone who has this issue; we just have to find out what it is.

Can everyone please list their hardware and operating system?
Also please list any (internet) security software you may have installed (firewall, antivirus, antimalware, EMET or other exe hardening utilities, etc.?)

Sure:

Win7 x64, intel i5-4690k, gtx 1080ti

Only security software I'm running is comodo firewall 5.10 with all of the non-firewall features disabled.

I tried running the update in a fairly-fresh win7 VM and it worked, so it doesn't seem to be specific to win7 (although the OS patches applied in the VM vs my real machine are vastly different)

Hi, i has the same issue.

Win7, i7-3770, Avast antivirus (nothing new in quarantine).

Also - i cant download a previous version - ftp://archive.palemoon.org/basilisk/ seems to be dead (no answers to pings too) :(

Same Problem.

Win10, AMD Ryzen1800X, RX580, Windows AntiVirus

Note: for me, the "Update" window was frozen too. Finish and Cancel button without reaction.

-jsconsole is empty.

If i start Basilisk with -P to select another profile the profile list is empty and the Profile Chooser Window has no reaction to any button klicks like the Basilik or the update window.

Hmm.. so the problem exists on both intel and amd, on win 7 and win 10, dedicated and onboard graphics...
I'm assuming 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Basilisk are the same? I tried both, no issue.

What about extensions? Are there common ones? Adblock Plus, perhaps? I'm having CTR and S4E installed myself in Basilisk and that's fine so that shouldn't be a problem. But I -am- using Adblock Latitude instead of Adblock Plus.

Unfortunately, I also cannot reproduce this problem using 32/64-bit versions of Basilisk, both in the main Win7x64 and in all my test vm Win7/8.1/10 boxes.

As far as I understand, it follows from this that the problem is not due to extensions.

Does the problem persist if you use the installer to install a new copy of Basilisk?

Yes.

I just did an uninstall, moved the profile away and deleted the moonchild content in %APPDATA%.
After that steps i did an install and was greeted with an import wizard (Import from Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) which was broken too. (No working buttons)
After canceling the import wizard (kill with taskmanager) basilisk start with empty window (as described in the first post).

Windows 32 Bit Version is broken too.

Moonchild, perhaps it would be helpful to publish a Pale Moon unstable from the same point as Basilisk 2018.11.04 and check if there are any such problems on the affected systems?

Worth a shot, at least.
I'll build and push them out within an hour or two.

EDIT: new unstables of Pale Moon published with the exact same platform source as the latest Basilisk release.

I just downloaded pale moon unstable portable (from this link: http://rm-us.palemoon.org/release/palem ... rtable.exe) and ran it, I get pretty much the same result. Only difference is the window starts rather small, but the browser is equally unusable otherwise.

Also, I have no idea if this helps, but I downloaded a "portable" copy of firefox 63 (32 bit) and ran it, it works fine.

Can confirm the same issue seems to be present on the PM Unstable ver.

No real difference at all since the same thing happens in Basilisk 2018.11.04 if you try a new profile.
