64 bit Pale Moon crashes at launch since version 28

Unread post by sotesz » 2018-10-22, 16:28

Hello everyone!

I've been using 64 bit, Windows version of Pale Moon for some time with no such issue that I have since the lauch of version 28.
Pale Moon crashes immediately at launch since the very first 28th version.

I have tried a fresh install, and the portable version too, which makes me think that the add-ons are not the problem.
I have also tried running as Administrator.
All the following sub-versions after 28.0.0 also crashed at lauch.
I have found out since, that the 32 bit portable version does Not crash, and starts successfully. But since Pale Moon memory usage commonly goes above 5GB, I am hesitant to switch to the 32 bit version.

EDIT: The problem in my case was using old version (5) of Comodo Internet Security. (See Moonchild's post further below.)

So I am curious whether this symptom tells you anything, if it actually would already have a workaround (besides a VM), or if there is any hope seeing this fixed in the coming versions.
Thanks in advance for your time!

Config info:
Operating system: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit SP1 ver.: 6.1.7601

(Installed extensions/plugins: Irrelevant as problem occurs with fresh install and portable version too. Also see Troubleshooting Info.)

32 bit portable version does Not crash ... But ... memory usage commonly goes above 5GB
I don't see how that can be?
32-bit application will be limited to a max of 4GB & figuring you'd most likely have hung or crashed prior to that anyhow.
which makes me think that the add-ons are not the problem
In any case, for testing, you want to use a new, clean Profile.

Try that Profile in Safe Mode.
(Seemingly that will also fail.)

Restart your computer in Safe Mode with Networking & test PM that way.

Hi therube!

Some clarification:
- Pale Moon memory usage goes above 5GB during my normal use: that is with the 64 bit version 27.x. Even then, it doesn't start out that high, so launching my normal profile in 32 bit could be possible, but I would likely meet constraints soon.
- Until I get past the initial crash, I always do tests with portable versions for the very reason to have a clean profile - so no profiles are imported or copied over.

I have tried your advice, and the 64 bit version started successfully in Safe Mode! Inspired by this, I tried Normal mode with Aero and Desktop composition turned off, and also with switching the display driver over to the "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" driver. None of them worked.
So as of now, with the newest portable version + fresh profile:
Normal mode + 32 bit P.M. : OK,
Safe mode + 64 bit P.M. : OK,
Normal mode + 64 bit P.M. : crash at launch. And that is the desirable combination unfortunately.

Thanks for the tip.

EDIT: By Safe mode and Normal mode, I'm referring to the modes of the OS, not the browser. Trying -safe-mode on the command line didn't circumvent the crash.

Since the crash occurs in stackhash, the crash report is next to useless, and we'd need an actual crashdump to see what's going on here.
See if you can make a crashdump (minidump) of the win64 process (see instructional post elsewhere on this forum) and sending that across to me.

Hi Moonchild!

I have uploaded to the FTP server "sotesz-20716-00.zip", which hopefully contains the required data.
(I've selected (File>Open Executable...) palemoon.exe from the Bin\Palemoon folder instead of the portable executable since that produced a message window that didn't come up when launching the portable exe. I selected Debug>Go two times.)

Also, thanks for yami_'s reply too. I can't comment on the observation myself unfortunately.

I have that exact same video card and had no issues with PM in any 28 version 64 bit.

Driver version

So it's most likely not the video card.

Yeah I suspected that after the Standard VGA driver didn't make it work. Thanks for the input handyman!

Thanks for the dump file. The call stack puts the culprit at guard64.dll which seems to be (according to the internet) part of Comodo Internet Security. If you have that installed then also be aware that the version of that dll is 5.*, so it's an old version of CIS which is known to cause issues. There are reports of it crashing 64-bit versions of Chrome, MPC-HC, and other applications. Apparently updating to 6.3.3 or later fixes the issue.

Wow. Thanks, would not have suspected that. Looks like I'll have to look for alternatives.

EDIT: I confirm, that the crash does not occur with the newest version of Comodo Internet Security.

Man, I guess I dodged a bullet with that one. I used to use that version of
Comodo before PM 28 and dropped it a few months before 28 for Private Firewall 7.0

For the life of me, I can't remember why I was staying with that version, but it had
something to do with some features I did not want, that they put in after that version.

Glad Moonchild found the culprit.

I remember my reasons:
1) From version 6, CIS seemed to head in a kind of bloatware direction, but at the least the new interface was super-fancy, dumb, and just repulsive for me.
2) IIRC the 5th version was the last that ran on Windows XP, and both my main PC and netbook had that back then. At some point I've decided to give Windows 7 a try, but did not think of getting the new CIS for the former reason until now.

@Thehandyman1957: Was your choice Privatefirewall from Privacyware? I'll have a look at that as an alternative (though the newest CIS doesn't have That much of a horrible UI as back then).

Thanks for setting the Topic solved, I had a quick look for such a functionality, but didn't find it, sorry.

I have an inherent distrust of large security, software companies in general,
and try to use software that was not designed by such large companies. It took a little
getting used to, but I actually like it better. Seems to have much better control,
but sadly there doesn't seem to be too much info about all the settings. So it was
a little frustrating at first.

Doesn't look like that has anything to do with this thread.
I'll be locking this as solved. Iliad, please don't revive solved threads with unrelated questions, it makes it harder for people to find what they need on the forum.

As a follow-up to the topic here. We've solved this issue by blocklisting the hazardous DLL injection.
Mozilla has indicated they are not planning to do the same, and are refusing a 1-liner fix for these crashes. Oh well, their loss.
