Revert back the new behaviour for login/password field

Unread post by musicmedia » 2018-08-25, 22:38

Hello,

I would like to revert back the previous behaviour the following changes but I did NOT find anything in "about:config" or "password manager" to do that:

"This is a behavior change from previous, and clicking a password field can now pop-up a selection list of user names for which passwords are stored"

In clear, I do not want to have this pop-up showing the list of user names I have stored for the site
I want to revert back how it was in Palemoon 27

How can I do that or when this change will be available in about:config ?

Thanks !

See if setting browser.formfill.enable to false does it, not sure?

Also, you might need to clear data, erase the existing field data, separately?
And this would affect form data in general, not just login fields.

this suggestion did nothing affecting the pop-up showing the login list for the sites
it seem to be integrated in the javascript engine from last update and nobody put anything to revert back this behaviour

Software development and changed behavior does not always mean that the previous behavior will always be retained or remain an option.

The new behavior is, as far as we know, in all ways superior in that it gives the user more precise control over which credentials are used, and offering the storage of disjointed user names and passwords.

If there's a something specific you want the old behavior for, then please describe in detail what the problem is, in what way the old method satisfied your needs and in what way the new method prevents you from using the credentials as-intended.

privacy concern is my 1st reason
without having on the websites yet the pop-up listing my logins is already showing up
The previous version was showing only if a single login was used and also have the ability to not display it with about:config
otherwise, the previous version was require to CLICK on the field to have all logins showing up... this changes doing it without clicking the field upset me enough to have removed 28 version & get back to 27 !
I don't see where user get more control by removing control !
I just asking to have control on this logins list pop-up in order to enable or disable it... to have the simple choice over it such as if I prefer to click to see it or if I prefer the automatic pop-up

It is not the only one things hapenning in version 28
The login field acting strangely while it has a login into it suddenly disappear for no reason then come back...
The websites pages is also something more difficult to browser & scroll since 28 which I can't explain why

I wanted to upgrade but until future version where I will see I can get back in control and trying will be as good as 27 version is... I will stay with version 27 till there

As example, I choose Linux over all others OS for a single reason, for the ability to get in control and to have the choice on how I want things
I always hated Windows because it wanted just me to do what he wanted the manner he wanted, letting me only few choices if none.
I left Windows 10 years ago to switch to Linux and I'm still there today !

Off-topic:
I hope when you reverted back to 27 from 28, you made a new profile for 27. If you didn't, you may start to find 27 is not behaving like it did before you went to 28 . Reverting back from 28 to 27 causes problems. It is just a matter of time before problems will crop up and show themselves to you.

For your own knowledge I ALWAYS use LIVE USB when trying something
I have my entire system running on a USB LIVE "squashfs" like right now
I do update the LIVE when necessary and I know the changes are stable
Then I also do a system backup using Image for Linux where anything can be restored in minutes !
I NEVER do any change on the normal system wihout knowing it is as it should and ready to go.
I'm using Linux for more than 10 years, I know what I'm doing...

Thanks !

So...

is there an easy, simple way
to keep my current Pale Moon browser
version 27.9.4
(working just fine with all my valuable addons
under Ubuntu Linux 14.04 32-bit LTS),
and do a separate install of PM v28 ?.

In other words:
can I install PM 28 independently,
separate, without touching my PM 27.9.4?.

This way we can run either version,
until we feel confident with PM28.

Please,
use easy to follow steps for
the non-techie fans & End-Users of PM...

Thanks! :wtf:

It has an esasy way to do that and it is offered by palemoon themselves
you just have to download the bzip_tarball, unpack and just click "palemoon"
You have all the infos there: http://linux.palemoon.org/
I'm using an image from Ubuntu-MATE 14.04 and 18.04 by the way

thks for the quick reply, MusicMedia.

But...it seems that if you install PM 28,
it will overwrite/change the old (current) PM 27.9.4 PROFILE FILE forever.

So, even if you go back to PM 27.9.4,
the PROFILE FILE will be tailored to PM 28.
See? you can't really go back...

So, we need an easy, simple non-techie way
(recipe) to keep both PM versions alive in the same PC!... :eh:

Let's call this Recipe:
"Never burn your bridges behind you.".
You may need them later...

Solrry but as previously said
I'm running LIVE
which means I can do any test I want without changing anything
each time I reboot a LIVE system he goes at the same point it was when it was created

So if the suggestion made before does not works for you

I suggest to use LIVE system to check time to time if the new palemoon version is as you wish to be

very simple way as you requested !
just use a live cd or usb
or
use remastersys

Good Luck

You can craft text file with exec access to switch profiles, put it into the home dir and then make shortcut in the desktop, or if the linux palemoon recognizes run commands like profile and no-remote it can be done even better. Suppose doing this is no techie, this is linux.

Yes, you can have multiple versions installed at once, but you will not be able to use the same profile for both installs, and your desktop environment will likely only be able to use one for integration (default link handling for example).

YES
as I'm running live I do not have to do that
but I didn't think about the "profile.ini"
And YES, it is easy & simple !

Correct, Isengrim!.
And that's the problem...

How to easily have the 2 PM versions available,
each running its own PROFILE file?.
What is the stepXstep Recipe for that? (for non-techie End Users...).

NOT true
they are using the same
you have to edit the profiles.ini & create a different profile for each one

like this:

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0]
Name=P27
IsRelative=1
Path=zp70wud8.default
Default=1

[Profile1]
Name=P28
IsRelative=1
Path=hjdfjhgfk87.default

Well, according to PM expert TRAVA90,
once you install PM 28,
it will use and customize the Profile File for itself.

So, according to Trava90,
if you go go back to PM 27.9.4,
it might not work correctly.

Right, Trava90?.

One more reason
to have a Recipe for 2 independent PM installs
(each w/ a version specific Profile file).

This way you don't burn bridges behind you...

I can only say
Everything seem to be complicated for you
While you could have just to use a LIVE CD or USB then check time to time for the new palemoon version

I don't work with "might be"
I installed p28 and I'm back on P27
And it works

For someone like you
LIVE system is your friend for now & forever

I have something else to do
& by the way
I still have no solution for the creation of this post... Seem I will have to wait a future version of Palemoon

So, I stop this discussion here as I have things to do

Good Luck !

Ok, musicmedia...

Can you pls share
with the rest of us
how you created your LIVE version on a USB?
(stepXstep Recipe, please
- we are not all as knowledgeable as you).

To answer your privacy concern... You do realize that the website does not see anything the password manager shows you locally for making choices, right?
If you do realize that, then what is your concern, that someone can see which other user names have passwords stored in your profile by looking over your shoulder...?

Also, It's still not clear to me what functionality you feel is missing. If there's only a single login stored and you've enabled automatic filling in of login details in Preferences (which is something that was changed a little longer ago) then credentials are still automatically entered without a click.
