PM 28.0.0 impressions/addon compatbility discussion

Unread post by fillerup » 2018-08-17, 07:40

so i've been on Basilisk for the last couple of months, and decided to give PM 28 a run now that it's finally released. my impressions (only Windows version so far):

on a brand new profile, the first thing i notice is that it's VERY FAST. i never bought into the Firefox Quantum/electrolysis hype, never cared for Chrome even when everyone was raving about how fast it is, but this PM release is making me reconsider my stance on speed.

multimedia also seems to work as advertised, tried a number of sites and none have given me trouble so far. going full screen in twitch is smooth and takes an instant, miles better than PM 27 where the animation is kinda choppy and it takes an extra second to enter full screen.

smooth scrolling has also been VASTLY improved, i no longer have access to Microsoft Edge but the gap now is minimal if it even exists at all.

bookmark toolbars use HiDPI favicons now, hooray!

the only downside is the addon situation which i hope will be resolved some time soon, but right now both TMP and TST are non functional which renders PM 28 unusable for me.

your experiences?

yes, my old profile (created in 27.9.4) is also partially unusable upon being opened in PM 28. nowhere as bad as what you're experiencing though..

What I missed in the announcement or release notes: Besides several legacy add-on API's, does it also support a few Web Extension interfaces? I thought to remember that there was some limited support already. Or am I wrong?

Updating from v27.9.4 to v28.0.0 (Win64) was flawless for me on two PC's, even the new German Language pack was updated without spawning the yellow XML error I got a few times in earlier versions.

Basilisk has limited WebExtension support, but Pale Moon does not.

Was using Pale Moon 28 before it has become stable. No issue with migrating to 28 - was all running fluid. So far the experience is great. It is reasonable fast and works well with the pages i visit.

So, in my case no reason to complain :thumbup:

Very good impressions.

I used new profile in unstable versions but for Pale Moon 28.0.0 final version I wanted to try migrate PM27 profile to see how it works in PM28. I did make backup of old profile first obviously.

Migrating profile from Pale Moon 27.9.4 worked without noticeable problems and addons that I use work without problems. Pale Moon 28 has better performance on web in large even when using PM27 profile and not just new profile like in unstable versions.

Also thanks to adesh for doing pull request which was merged, one html parser performance improvement made it into UXP platform and PM28 release.

After upgrading to V-28 to start watching videos on YouTube, the browser began to slow down and the browser window became completely black.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Preferences -> Advanced -> General.

- Pale Moon v.28 fresh install (portable since testing was my primarily objective) works like a charm for me and I didn't encounter any problems so far.
- For me at least, the main advantage over other browsers is the support for legacy extensions.
Legacy extensions are far superior (more powerful) compared to web extensions. Web extensions are limited becuase of restrictive API policies.
Legacy extensions I've tested and work with PM v28:
* Cookie Controller v.5.4 (quickly toggle and manage cookies from a toolbar button)
* Mouse Gestures Suite v.2.5.0
* Proxy Selector v.1.31.1 (quickly toggle and manage proxies from a toolbar button)
* Toggle animated GIFs v.1.3.1
* Toggle JavaScript v.0.9 (quickly toggle JS from a toolbar button)
* uBlock Origin v.1.16.4.4 (!since later versions have been made compatible with web extensions, they might not work in private mode browsing / it uses now indexedDB for storage instead of its own ublock0.sqlite!)

On my laptop with windows 7 (x32), mobile intel celeron 900 @ 2200MHz, 2GB ram new PM 28 sometimes randomly freezes when opening heavy sites

tried clean portable version to check if it was addons or old profile causing it but still managed to freeze PM with http://steinsgate0-anime.com/ (see attachment)

Also feels like css that I use with Stylem addon to show background image on about:blank page now working little slowly - for milliseconds page is filled with black color before image shows

Code: Select all

/********************************/
/*   about:blank - custom */
/********************************/

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
@-moz-document url("about:blank") {
*:empty:not([style]):not([text]):not([class]):not([onresize]) {

background:  url(https://i.imgur.com/rIgX9wA.jpg);
margin:0px;
background-color:#352C2D;
background-position:center;
background-attachment:fixed;
background-repeat:no-repeat;
background-size:cover;
}
.editable, .editable * {
background:none !important;
}

}

thanks, keeping a watchful eye on this

further reports:

- a third crucial extension that i rely on is also completely broken on PM 28: Hide Caption Titlebar Plus 4.0.7. it hides the titlebar but not the page title, it cuts off part of the actual browser (looks as if it's stretched out beyond the screen), and none of the other features work. downgrading to 2.8.6.1 works, but that old version lacks the modern looking max/min/close buttons that don't look like they came from the previous century.

- PM 28 is still having difficulty with problematic websites (e.g. https://starcraft.com/en-us/), same as Basilisk. rendering and scrolling is quite slow and very choppy. NO such issues on Slimjet (Chrome-based) and Waterfox. here is MC's explanation from a few months ago:
FTR: https://starcraft.com/ isn't performance-demanding; it uses a specific overlay effect (svg clip paths over very large images) that Goanna 3 is simply not optimized for and as a result get a very large number of invalidations and repaints that indeed can freeze the browser and make scrolling painfully slow. That is just as much poor website design as anything else - and it will likely be very CPU intensive even on mainstream browsers if HWA can't be used.

Does Hide Caption Titlebar Plus 4.0.7 ever work with 27.x? I personally use 2.8.6.1 for a long time already.

yes, it works perfectly in 27.9.4. i only tried it in the first place cos i read somewhere about Pale Moon specific support being added, which turned out to be true

http://steinsgate0-anime.com/ doesn't freeze here but performs lousy even with an Intel i5 CPU @3.00GHz 8GB RAM.
Tested with Firefox 52.9.0 ESR and PM 28 - makes no difference.
