kvsupply.com denies access

Unread post by pdreyfuss » 2018-07-22, 17:24

I can't get to this site with Pale Moon. Chrome and Edge work OK. Why and how to fix it?
https://www.kvsupply.com/

TIA.

If I remember correctly, I think it worked the first time but not afterward.

I get this message:
Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://www.kvsupply.com/" on this server.

I have no problem accessing that site -- you may need to use the default setting for UserAgent compatibility though (Firefox Compatibility) -- a number of sites hard-refuse what they think are unknown clients with such messages.

It displayed fine for me with the Native UserAgent.

I can get to the site without any problems using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 27.9.4 running in 64 bit linux Mint 19 (Tara) Xfce. And user agent mode is set for Firefox Compatibility. Only addon/extensions I have installed are NoSquint and Adblock Latitude and ABL is enabled.

Site works for me in Firefox Compatibility mode. However, the big horizontal box ad banner at the top of the screen, which scrolls through 4 ads, shows only the first one. The other three are plain white nothing.

It's your useragent setting.

Set something like this, general.useragent.override;seafoxmoon, & confirm the issue exists.
Clear the Pref, general.useragent.override, AND clear your cookies, & confirm the site works.

(Or clear the site specific override, if you happen to be using that.)

Actually that might not be correct ...
Confirmed.

The site fails in PM 27.

New Profile
Load: https://www.kvsupply.com/
(page loads & displays as expected)
Refresh the page

Result:
Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://www.kvsupply.com/" on this server.

(Reference number is variable.)

Clear Recent History -> 1 hour

Refresh the page

Page loads as expected

Refresh the page

Access Denied ...

Seems what you need to do is in fact to set up a site specific override, so something like:

Code: Select all

general.useragent.override.kvsupply.com;Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0 SeaMonkey/2.53
Happens to work. (Doesn't have to be that, but I had that on hand.)

Might be more politically correct (& also works) ;-):
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:52.9) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/4.1 Firefox/52.9 PaleMoon/28.0.0b4

AFAICS, This problem is not present in PM 28 beta.

Concerning PM 27.* --
This is the same issue that's come up before (for some people) with Home Depot, oreillyauto.com and kroger.com.
Read through the discussion in the Home Depot thread.

See here. The issue can be reproduced in PM 27.* if all of the following are true:
(which they will be in a new profile)
  1. The browser is set to use Firefox Compatibility mode (not Native mode);
  2. Cookies are enabled;
  3. Local storage is enabled (dom.storage.enabled = true);
  4. If there is an adblocker, it does not use the list EasyPrivacy.
Any of these: using Native mode, subscribing to EasyPrivacy in your adblocker, or using (any of various) UA Overrides for kvsupply.com will solve this.

In addition to overrides mentioned by @therube, see this post.
And if you would like to use your Native UA for the override string, please read here.

Thank you all. I finally had a moment to try one of your ideas (native mode with the override string from the home depot post - viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18905&start=40#p140300). It works perfectly.

@pdreyfuss, I'm glad you found a solution. I just want to mention that, like you, I was able to access the site the first time with no problem, but when I tried again, I got the same "access denied" message that you did. I wonder how many of the people who said "no problem here" tried to duplicate the problem you described by attempting to log in a second time.

I can confirm you are correct. I can access the site the first time, but not the second time. Normally, when dealing with a site, I click on a link and it will either work or not. This site threw me a curve ball and I'll admit it.

This site (and the others mentioned above) deny access based on information from a particular cookie:
<domain name> ak_bmsc (see posts 1, 2, 3 in Home Depot thread).
kvsupply's " ak_bmsc " cookie .
ak_bmsc-cookie.png
This cookie apparently doesn't send back the information that triggers denial of access until there has been at least one page refresh.
