Pale Moon Extensions on Basilisk?

Unread post by fatboy » 2018-06-13, 07:50

Good Community,

I apologize if this is a duplicate post, but I couldn't find the info I was looking for.
Anyway, I remember reading that there will come a time when Basilisk will not use FF addons and only use PM addons?
I am currently keen on installing certain Pale Moon addons.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

You remember incorrectly. Pale Moon exclusive extensions will only work on Pale Moon.

OK cool, is Basilisk going to use its own extensions then?

Either Firefox-legacy or its own with a special flag in the install manifest to explicitly indicate target, yes.

If they target Firefox, they should work on Basilisk, otherwise you ask the developer to make it available for Basilisk too.

Pale Moon extensions do not work on Basilisk. You can only migrate Firefox add-ons from Pale Moon to Basilisk.
You also need to use legacy firefox extensions for Basilisk.

I thought the whole point of Basilisk was to have another browser with XUL support. Aren't you going to switch over Pale Moon's codebase to Basilisk in the future? Or did I just completely misunderstand all the the announcements about Basilisk?

The announcements have been extremely clear, I thought.

Basilisk and Pale Moon (28) are both applications building on the same platform, UXP. Basilisk is the "reference application" for the platform, and it has been and is being used as a practical way of developing and testing the platform's underpinnings for any future UXP application. So no, Basilisk is not the new Pale Moon, and Pale Moon's codebased is not being switched over to Basilisk -- they will exist side by side.

Of course, Basilisk supports XUL extensions. But that does not mean that each and every XUL extensions will work with it. It is also very likely that extensions working with current Pale Moon do not with Basilisk. That is due to huge differences between the underlying platforms and different UI for both.
When Pale Moon switches to UXP, then also, there will be XUL extensions which will not work on both the browsers. Even if the platform for both becomes same, they would still be two different applications having different interfaces and feature sets.

Ok, I was not pedantic enough. I should have said, "How can I migrate the extensions I'm using in Pale Moon 27.9.3 to Basilisk?"
You also need to use legacy firefox extensions for Basilisk.

Great. So Forecastfox is a no-go no matter what.

That seems odd, I am surprised you cannot load extensions from palemoon on basilisk.

This I say because I thought, Palemoon was now based on basilisk.

Sigh ... here we go again ....
UXP = a platform that applications can be built on.
Basilisk = an application, specifically: a browser using the UXP platform.
Pale Moon = another application, specifically: another browser using the UXP platform (as of Pale Moon version 28).
Basilisk and Pale Moon may both be built on UXP, but they are two different (and separate) applications.

Forecastfox (fix version) 2.4.8 works just fine on the current version of Basilisk.

This was off topic? My bad, I wasn't aware of what you just told me. Thank you for letting me know.

That explains why palemoon addons don't work on basilisk.
