Basilisk - clear history

Unread post by JoeyG » 2018-05-15, 11:38

I have Basilisk set to "Clear history when Basilisk closes".

Under the related "Settings", everything is checked except "Site Preferences". This includes "Active Logins".

I just installed an update (1.7.3.4) to the Classic Theme Restorer extension. It requires a browser restart.

When it restarted, I was still logged in to Basilisk.

Is this a bug?

Thanks.

This is not a bug, because Restart != Exit+Start, and it does not reset the session.

Thanks for your reply, but I don't understand what you mean by "Restart != Exit+Start".

What's the purpose of your exclamation point (Restart !)?

And if it's a feature, what's the logic? I mean, isn't the first step in the restart closing the browser?

You've used the word "exit"; how does this differ from "close"?

Are there any other ways to "exit" the browser that don't involve "closing" it?

My point is that I rely on closing the browser as one of many security measures. Based upon what you've said, "exiting" (as opposed to "closing") the browser nullifies this.

Or am I missing something?

Thanks.

Any idea about the rest of my issue?

Don't worry, everything will be cleared when you exit (close) the browser; restart when installing or removing extensions is just a special case.

Hmmmm, no, it looks like something's wrong.

I just clicked Ctrl+Cap+Del, the Clear All History Window opened ("Time Range to Clear" is set to "Everything"), I clicked "Clear Now", and then I clicked "reload". I'm still logged in to the forum!

I've just tried it with my online banking, though, and clicking Ctrl+Cap+Del worked as expected; I was logged out.

Now I see that the "problem" seems to relate to forum logins; besides this one, I tried a couple of others.

Why don't forums behave as expected? Even completely restarting the browser doesn't log me out of the forums.

Thanks.

I can't reproduce your issue using Basilisk 2018.05.15. As soon as you clear cookies for forum.palemoon.org, you log out immediately.

Hmmmm, then I wonder what the problem on my end is.

Trying it with a brand-new profile and poking around a bit revealed some very interesting things.

(1) Hitting Ctrl+Cap+Del doesn't bring up a little window that says "Clear all History".
Image

(2) I'm able to log into this forum with cookies blocked using the "CookieShield" extension. In contrast, I'm not able to log into EBay with cookies blocked using the same extension.

(3) And much more amazing ...

You might want to attribute this to my theme, but I disabled it, and - besides the colors and icons - the difference between the items when using my profile vs. with a new profile are still there.

I have to confess here that my profile is a much-manipulated version of the one I brought to Basilisk (and PM) from Firefox. Yes, I know you're not supposed to do this. I know.

Nonetheless, I still find the phenomenon fascinating (I guess I sound like Mr. Spock).

Please notice that even with the "extra" entries in my version, the Privacy panel indeed refers to Basilisk.

Other than building a new profile, is there any way to get the genuine Basilisk functions in the Privacy panel rather than what I appear to have now: a "Privacy panel from outer space"?

Thanks.

Then your application or profile is corrupted or you have a conflicting extension.
(2) I'm able to log into this forum with cookies blocked using the "CookieShield" extension. In contrast, I'm not able to log into EBay with cookies blocked using the same extension.
Then you probably better remove the extension, which behaves incomprehensibly.

"Use custom settings for history" and "Never remember history" are different modes with a different configuration interface.

This is not recommended for a good reason.
Other than building a new profile, is there any way
In your case, I don't know of other options to achieve a stable operation.

After a delay, I'd like to bring this issue up again because now I see that Ctrl+Cap+Del doesn't log us out of any sites. On PM, it works fine.

It seems that pressing Ctrl+Cap+Del simply doesn't delete the session cookies, although I have it set to.

I'm sure it's one of my extensions because it works as expected with a new profile.

Here's the list of my extensions. Does anyone see anything that might be causing it? I've tried removing Cookie Shield; that's not it.

Thank you very much.

Better Privacy?
Cookie Shield?

The two most likely, I'd think.
