Streaming movie won't play

Unread post by greyowl » 2018-02-02, 01:51

I am trying to get a movie to stream from the hoopla website. The little processing wheel turns but it never starts to play.

I tried it on Firefox 52 ESR and I got a message that DRM needs to be enabled. So I enabled DRM, then it said that it was downloading some necessary files for video. Then it played the movie.

On the basis of the above information, is there any idea on how I could get PM to play the movies on hoopla?

Probably not, because Pale Moon does not include/support DRM.

Pardon my ignorance, but does the no-DRM condition mean that Palemoon will not work with Netflix?

How is that possible if Pale Moon does not support DRM on Linux?

That is not what I said Gracious.

I was implying that Netflix will play in Pale Moon on a Windows machine. I have no idea if Netflix will or won't play on a Linux machine.

Since Netflix video is always DRM-protected, it follows from your statement that if it plays in Windows, DRM is somehow working in Pale Moon for Windows. I don't know if it's falling back to some sort of Silverlight or Flash DRM, or if it indeed is using widevine somehow for the HTML playback, but this seems odd.

Pale Moon has no eme in the Tycho codebase so if it works it must be using silverlight still..

I am still wanting to figure out a way to play movies from hoopla.com with PM.
Is there any plugin or extension that could make it work?

This link "hoopla.com" does not exist!
Maybe "https://www.hoopladigital.com/"
Or: "https://hoopla.la/"
Windows 10 pro /64 (version 1809)
PM last/64

Sorry for the confusion.
It is www.hoopladigital.com where I want to stream movies. It is a service through the library system for the US and Canada.
When I try to stream a movie the little progress wheel just keeps turning but the movie doesn't start.
As mentioned, the movies stream fine with Firefox.
Do you have any ideas on how to get this to work?

I guess that they don't have any support you could ask, or don't have a clue about anything Linux, as is so sadly often the case?

What you describe for Firefox matches what it does when downloading the widevine DRM plugin files, which is how they work around not including those closed plugins with the program, but Pale Moon does not support the widevine plugins, AFAIK. You could try copying them over to the PM plugin folder just to see what happens, though.

Is it possible to put eme in the tycho codebase so that PM could run videos?

I don't think it's going to happen. According to the "roadmap" https://www.palemoon.org/roadmap.shtml
The following specific media streaming feature(s) is/are not on Pale Moon's roadmap:
* In-browser DRM (EME)
There's a right way
There's a wrong way
And then there's my way

EME is not and will not be part of Pale Moon. If you must have EME you will have to use another browser such as Basilisk or others.
