I don't get the 'lower end hardware' argument. I have a desktop circa 2007 - Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, GeForce 8600 GT and was running XP originally. In 2014 I upgraded it to 7, and after that the free update to 10. It takes a little longer to boot up, but is fairly usable for surfing the net (It runs the 32-bit version of palemoon) and can comfortably run mid 2000s level games as well.
I will still have to dispose of this eventually as 32-bit computers themselves become obsolete.

Core 2 Duo is 64-bit.

Damn..it's running the 32-bit version of 10, upgraded all the way from XP. Gotta replace the OS then :(

A fresh install might be a good idea in that case anyway. Such long upgrade paths are known to cause issues over time.

Yup, Windows won't allow an upgrade over the same version anyhow.
