I often do contacts with Sparky developers. I will tell this to him.stevepusser wrote: Edit: I have noticed that the Stretch-based Sparky Linux switched their build to gcc-4.9, too. I guess it worked because at that time, Debian had not removed gcc-4.9 from the release, but if they are going to build the next release to their repo, they are going to have to build gcc-4.9 themselves and build against it, the same as I had to do with the Stretch OBS repo.

There is a possibility that the influence is great. I posted Japanese information:

I see that 27.4.0 is now officially released, so I've downloaded the new source archive and am having the OBS build from that.

Steve,
I enabled your repo, and attempted to install ver 24 (ubuntu 14.04), however synaptic wanted to remove a whole schack of stuff including vlc. I do recall this being the case with version 23. That did not happen with the kovacsoltvideo repo: It installed only palemoon.
"deb http://kovacsoltvideo.hu/moonchildproductions/ ./"
That said, I see vers 24 is not yet at kovacsoltvideo.hu. I am wondering why your compiles dependencies are such that cause these removals? Just curious.
Best regards,
Bob

Re: Ubuntu 16.0.4, 15.10, 15.04, 14.04, Debian 8 Pale Moon repositories
It does not happen on an unmodified Ubuntu 14.04. I have to suspect due to PM's dependency on libav-tools or ffmpeg, you have somehow changed your base multimedia (libav*) libraries from the regular versions, and that's what causing the issues with vlc, since it also (usually) depends on them.
could provide some insight to those on your system.
Code: Select all
apt-cache policy vlc ffmpeg libav-tools

I'm also interested in that new repo--I've never heard of it before. Are they just rebuilding from my debianized source files?

Steve, the kovacsolt repo simply contains .deb repacks of the tarballs on linux.palemoon.org.

There's something else going on that I suspect is maybe being misread.
What exactly is your output when you type sudo apt-get install palemoon ?

For those interested, as am I;
Odd there is not mention of removing vlc, and other media packages, as opposed to using synaptic which does. Not complaining, nor looking for help...just trying to
learn. That said, I will just use apt to update pale moon using Steve's repo, since I do know more about Steve than the OP's repo.
Sorry for any noise.

Re: Ubuntu 16.0.4, 15.10, 15.04, 14.04, Debian 8 Pale Moon repositories
Hmmm--so you had palemoon:i386 from the Hungarian repo on your 64-bit system. That's OK, you had the i386 libraries installed to support it. I also don't think the apt command line tools respect any pinning that's done in Synaptic. I've also noticed that sometimes Synaptic wants to remove packages that the command line tools don't have any problem leaving installed--go figure.
Re: Ubuntu 16.0.4, 15.10, 15.04, 14.04, Debian 8 Pale Moon repositories
Yes, I have multiarch installed/enabled; and I too have noticed that synaptic's odd behavior before. I was never able to figure out the why. I imagine if I looked at the packaging script that might shed some light.
OTOH, I did remove palemoon.i386 and installed (your build) palemoon, without precipatating a dependency hell. I have to be very carefull with any installations...I have an older nvidia chipset, so newer mesa/kernels
updates are always subject to carefull scrutiny. I also need to keep pulse audio off as it produces increased error rates with ham radio sound card decoding; and last but not least, systemd api changes/bugs seem rampant these
days. I have learned the hard way to be very conservative.
Again, thank you for all your work. I for one really appreciate it.
Best regards,
Bob

Ahhh, I see; we also found that the Jessie builds have no problem on Stretch. I just wanted a Stretch repo on the OBS so users couldn't get nervous about adding a Jessie repo to Stretch, so had to add a gcc-4.9 to that repo.
