It seems to me that palemoon is now completely gone from your repo :wtf:

UPD: And now it is back again 8-)
The instructions disappear while new packages are building and publishing, but the previous packages are still in the repo until the new ones replace them. In this case, it took about an hour for them all to finish, though some only took about half that time.

It's not so important now, but they definitely weren't there:

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get update
[..]
Reading package lists... Done

$ sudo apt-get install palemoon
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package palemoon is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'palemoon' has no installation candidate
I tried to install it several times within 10-15 minutes before complaining.

Pale Moon in their repo--I have surfed around it and can't find any gcc-4.9 yet. http://sparkylinux.org/repo/pool/main/p/palemoon/
I often do contacts with Sparky developers. I will tell this to him.

stevepusser wrote:The reverted packages are building--users can downgrade from 27.4.0 by removing palemoon and then reinstalling it after the packages are finished, or force the version with something on the command line like

Code: Select all

sudo aptitude install palemoon=palemoon_27.3.0~repack-1
The OBS usually finishes the whole set of builds within an hour, but that varies depending on how many users are putting demands on it.
Oops! Ubuntu normally does not use aptitude. It will be apt command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install palemoon=27.3.0~repack-1
and Debian GNU/Linux etc may not use sudo. Use su instead. (For beginners ;) )

There is a possibility that the influence is great. I posted Japanese information:

I see that 27.4.0 is now officially released, so I've downloaded the new source archive and am having the OBS build from that.

Steve,
I enabled your repo, and attempted to install ver 24 (ubuntu 14.04), however synaptic wanted to remove a whole schack of stuff including vlc. I do recall this being the case with version 23. That did not happen with the kovacsoltvideo repo: It installed only palemoon.

"deb http://kovacsoltvideo.hu/moonchildproductions/ ./"

That said, I see vers 24 is not yet at kovacsoltvideo.hu. I am wondering why your compiles dependencies are such that cause these removals? Just curious.

Best regards,
Bob

It does not happen on an unmodified Ubuntu 14.04. I have to suspect due to PM's dependency on libav-tools or ffmpeg, you have somehow changed your base multimedia (libav*) libraries from the regular versions, and that's what causing the issues with vlc, since it also (usually) depends on them.

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy vlc ffmpeg libav-tools
could provide some insight to those on your system.

I'm also interested in that new repo--I've never heard of it before. Are they just rebuilding from my debianized source files?

Steve, the kovacsolt repo simply contains .deb repacks of the tarballs on linux.palemoon.org.

There's something else going on that I suspect is maybe being misread.

What exactly is your output when you type sudo apt-get install palemoon ?

Odd there is not mention of removing vlc, and other media packages, as opposed to using synaptic which does. Not complaining, nor looking for help...just trying to
learn. That said, I will just use apt to update pale moon using Steve's repo, since I do know more about Steve than the OP's repo.

Sorry for any noise.

Bob

Hmmm--so you had palemoon:i386 from the Hungarian repo on your 64-bit system. That's OK, you had the i386 libraries installed to support it. I also don't think the apt command line tools respect any pinning that's done in Synaptic. I've also noticed that sometimes Synaptic wants to remove packages that the command line tools don't have any problem leaving installed--go figure.

Yes, I have multiarch installed/enabled; and I too have noticed that synaptic's odd behavior before. I was never able to figure out the why. I imagine if I looked at the packaging script that might shed some light.
OTOH, I did remove palemoon.i386 and installed (your build) palemoon, without precipatating a dependency hell. I have to be very carefull with any installations...I have an older nvidia chipset, so newer mesa/kernels
updates are always subject to carefull scrutiny. I also need to keep pulse audio off as it produces increased error rates with ham radio sound card decoding; and last but not least, systemd api changes/bugs seem rampant these
days. I have learned the hard way to be very conservative.

Again, thank you for all your work. I for one really appreciate it.

Best regards,
Bob

Regarding this stuff:

Code: Select all

The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:
  libfdk-aac0
The following is with Steve's repo enabled and the .hu repo disabled in sources.list
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove it.
Follow those instructions above to remove that unneeded package.

Regarding this:

Code: Select all

The following packages have been kept back:
  update-notifier-common
...
32 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 1 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
Do

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
or

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install update-notifier-common
in order to get that upgrade (unless for some reason you don't want it).

Also, if ever there are problems with dependencies, do

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -f
I am glad you are switching to apt. I find I have more success and fewer issues with the good old command-line interface than with some of the GUI apps (at least with Ubuntu).

Ahhh, I see; we also found that the Jessie builds have no problem on Stretch. I just wanted a Stretch repo on the OBS so users couldn't get nervous about adding a Jessie repo to Stretch, so had to add a gcc-4.9 to that repo.
