Updating PM on Linux ?

Unread post by yellowfinch » 2017-01-09, 17:34

The FAQ titled "How do I update Pale Moon?" starts by mentioning that "Pale Moon has a built-in update checker, which is enabled by default".

I'm guessing that is meant for Windows users because there is no such thing in the Debian / Ubuntu / LM world.

By following a link to the "Community" section of software.opensuse.org I found instructions to "Add repository and install manually", which is simple enough but, at the end of the « apt-get update » step, gives me an error about being unable to verfify a signature because the public key is not available.

What am I missing?

Any clue would be much appreciated.

You need to add the repo key to apt. See the repo page for instructions.

Alternatively you can use the pminstaller tool.

I may need that too for my Precise Puppy installation.

I had done that. The problem wasn't with the repository.

Ok, I used pminstaller instead and it worked.

Many thanks!

installing programs on openSUSE/through the OBS makes for a frustrating experience, which is a shame because the distro is very polished otherwise

If "Palemoon update" exists on menu on Puppy Linux, it is the actual state of pminstaller.sh.
You can update PM by running it. (There is a recent Puppy, but it may not be in Precise)
If you used the .pet package, please check the latest update method on Puppy forum.

I confirmed the operation of pminstall.sh with Precise Puppy. It works normally.
You should be able to use the latest Pale Moon with this. (When posting: 27.0.3)

For the record: The internal installer can't be used on Linux because Linux uses its own packaging and distribution methods for each distro. That would conflict.

Did you follow this tutorial?
If you are using Ubuntu 16.04 instead of Ubuntu 14.04, you just need to change the appropriate characters in the command.

Actually, did you try this tutorial? (The thread linked to in my previous post had an error.) Particularly note the steps for obtaining the key, which is done after adding the repository to your sources.

If you are using Ubuntu 16.04 rather Ubuntu 14.04, you just need to change the appropriate numerals in the commands.
