http://www.wnyc.org displays as blank page

Unread post by sindi » 2016-12-25, 13:05

Puppy Linux Tahr 6.05 (on a 2008 Acer netbook) and Lucid 5.2.8.7 (on a 2005 HP laptop). Tahr uses packages from Ubuntu 14 and glibc 2.19.

Palemoon versions 26.0 and 26.5 atom, and 27.03 on the netbook. 26.5 on the laptop.

After a lot of google junk has downloaded, the wnyc page displays a large blank white rectangle with X in upper right (possibly due to use of adblocker) which when I click on the X goes away to reveal a completely blank page behind it.

With Opera 12.16 and Firefox 45 (both for linux) I get the same white rectangle with X , but the WNYC page does load. When I click on Listen link (http://wnyc.org/shows/otm) nothing happens. With Google Chrome (Aug 2015) on the netbook the listen link plays a podcast. Palemoon will play the same podcast via Tunein site.

Recent versions of these browsers do not work on my 32-bit hardware (Chrome) or with Puppy Linux (GTK2 - Firefox switched to GTK3), and Opera abandoned linux, so I installed Palemoon, hoping the most recent version would work better at wnyc.

I did not test Chromium. Iron did not work either.

I asked WNYC to make their site more accessible.

For the record, the wnyc site displays properly here using Pale Moon 27.0.3 on Windows; with Adblock latitude installed the popover layer is also blank (probably an ad, yes).
Depending on what other extensions you use, you may be blocking too much for the site (the site itself is rendered with javascript, by the looks of it). Please check that first.

I had no extensions installed.

I tried XP on the same netbook.

Firefox in XP plays the Listen link. Firefox 50 in linux does not.
But Opera 36 does not play the link.
IE 8 crashes while loading.
Palemoon (26, atom) loads the page in XP, but does not play the link.
All on the 2008 Acer Netbook.

In linux I have a system-wide adblocker, and gtk 3.0 (just updated to it to use latest Firefox).

You're tossing 2 things into one thread here; that creates a bit of confusion.

Not playing a podcast is one thing (expected on Linux because of dependencies and XP because of not offering WMF). But the main part I responded to was:
After a lot of google junk has downloaded, the wnyc page displays a large blank white rectangle with X in upper right (possibly due to use of adblocker) which when I click on the X goes away to reveal a completely blank page behind it.
This blank page would be a big problem but one I can't reproduce.

Which Windows did you use?

I asked friends to check the site with Palemoon in Arch and Slackware. Perhaps other forum users will check with their linuxes.

The site DOES play a podcast in linux with Google Chrome, and in XP with Firefox.

Maybe the site uses a recent Flash? If it were not a blank page I could try the linux Flash add-on.

Tunein radio works with Palemoon in linux (podcasts).

Right, focusing on media playback:
Linux: media playback is being worked on -- you currently need to correct set of dependencies for Gstreamer to work.
Windows: Playback works in any supported version of Windows. Windows XP doesn't have the windows media foundation for us to use, so that's likely why.

What do you mean by correcting gstreamer dependencies in linux?
ldd /usr/lib/libgstreamer* shows nothing missing.

Puppy Linux 6 (Tahr) uses packages from Ubuntu 12.

libgstreamer-1.0.so.0.204.0 from May 13 2014
and other libraries of the same date

Do we need newer versions of something to use wnyc site?

I tried to download the latest version of Lucid Puppy 5.2.8.7 (Dec 16 2016) to this netbook so I could check libraries.
With the latest Palemoon for linux (in the most recent Puppy Tahr) I see no list of files, but the top of the page is there (the bottom 80% is blank).

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/dh45w4 ... 16_Release

Same result with other links to mediafire from the same Puppy Linux discussion.

Opera 12.16 for linux works properly with mediafire.

WNYC site displays properly with palemoon in Arch linux (updated yesterday) but also does not play. The player appeared briefly first time my friend clicked on the link then never again.

I suggested to WNYC that they provide links to download podcasts, not just to a player.

The blank page is specific to Palemoon in combination with Puppy Linux.
Could some Puppy Linux library be older than Palemoon requires and if so which one?

Puppy Linux Tahr 6.0 uses Palemoon (26) as default browser so it should be made to work properly with it.

Using Manjaro x64 and Pale Moon the homepage loads and I can play the podcasts on the 'shows' page -- actually just listened to the Carrie Fisher interview.

No issues here.

I get the same results on my Manjaro box.

Media support on Linux will be improved in v27.1.

"Media support on Linux will be improved in v27.1"

I look forward to that.

Is the blank page problem something to be fixed in Palemoon or Puppy Linux? Maybe Palemoon expects a newer version of some library?

Puppy users have posted a lot of positive comments about Palemoon - low CPU and RAM usage, speedy, smooth scrolling, etc.

Seamonkey 2.46 displays the page and plays the podcast properly. They dropped SSE and XP support recently.

I can't reproduce the blank page. Have you tried with a new profile? Are there any messages in the error console?

Lots of warnings - error in parsing value for display (or background image).
Unknown property.

Errors at wnyc: 2 security and one type $.corsAjax is not a function

The palemoon.start.me has one security and one type error.

When I use other browsers to display the site (Palemoon in XP, Firefox, Seamonkey) they spend 2 minutes downloading ads.
I got the blank page with Pale Moon in a few seconds and nothing else tried to load.

Seamonkey latest version 2.46 plays the podcast on a 2008 netbook.

On a Pentium III (SSE) it shows the podcast player but nothing plays.
The SSE linux version won't load on the PIII because it is needs at least one library missing from my version of linux
which is or is related to libstdc++ (error involves GLIBCXXX_3.2.0 or similar).

This is a particularly challenging site.

I get the blank page at wnyc.org with Puppy Tahr 6.05 but NOT with Puppy Lucid 5.2.8.7 updated (July 2015 - there is also a Dec 28 2016 update). Puppy Lucid uses Ubuntu 10 packages but has apparently been updated more than the 'later' Tahr Puppy. I don't know why this particular combination of Pale Moon (but not Opera Firefox Seamonkey Chrome) and Puppy Linux Tahr produces blank pages.

I had tested with an earlier unofficial version of Lucid - 5.40. Different fork.

Puppy Tahr is officially supported and occasionally updated, but I think dates from 2014.

I will commend the person unofficially updating Puppy Lucid (with 41 pages of discussion since July 2015 and most reported bugs fixed immediately).
