Re: Mac/FreeBSD builds
Are you using Epyrus? Because in Epyrus it's in the Tools menu under Options (IMO where it belongs; not in the Edit menu)

Epyrus 2.1.2 in FreeBSD. I don't see "Options" in the "Tools" menu. Are you using a different version?

Re: Mac/FreeBSD builds
I'm guessing the BSD theme must place it in a different location then.
Sorry about the confusion in that case. I can only go by Windows here. I did make sure to check both the default theme and the theme I use on it (see screenshots).

Here is what it looks like on FreeBSD, with GTK3:

By the way, have you considered mentioning Epyrus on the Pale Moon web site?

Re: Mac/FreeBSD builds
I've never used Epyrus on FreeBSD per se, but I know that on Linux, there's a historical quirk of Thunderbird that we've preserved...
For whatever reason, even though on Windows you would go to Tools -> Options like Moonchild said, that's not the case on Linux.
The option is actually Edit -> Preferences to bring up the same dialog box. I honestly have no idea why it's like that, and it throws me off all the time when I'm testing the Linux version.
I would probably change it to be more like the Windows version, but the issue is all the Linux users are used to it being the way it is...

With the Athenians, the rights of the State and of the individual found as perfect a union as was possible at all at the level of the Greek spirit." -- Hegel's philosophy of Mind

Re: Mac/FreeBSD builds
Just my opinion, but I think something used as infrequently as the options/preferences window could definitely benefit from a consistent UI access path, as it's very likely to be one of the things you run into trying to provide support to users. Where you decide to place it is up to you, as it's your application, of course, (although to me it makes a lot more sense to have it in Tools than in Edit... what does preferences have to do with editing mail?) but at least make it the same place on every target O.S.? I'm sure users can adapt to it being moved. Not like you're hiding it in a hamburger or sub sub sub menu or what not. just to a sibling

Re: Mac/FreeBSD builds
To add even more confusion... on Mac it is:
Epyrus -> Settings
Since that is how Apple has their apps do it.
Regarding the Preferences being under Edit with GTK, I presume it is because you are editing the preferences when you go there.
Think it was just trying to be consistent with the platform, I know a lot of GTK applications would put that there. However GTK/Gnome UI is constantly in flux so that probably isn't the case anymore.
Current Mac:

Current GTK/Gnome:

Old GTK/Gnome:

That's topsy-turvy reasoning.

Re: Mac/FreeBSD builds
Real menuing systems will allow placing items and sub-menus at more than one location in the menu tree. Orrr make the location of variable items depend on user-defined config/pref at runtime - not just on the target platform at compile- or run-time.

Re: Mac/FreeBSD builds
When I was still using Linux and first switched to Pale Moon, I found the fact that the preferences were under the Tools menu to be confusing/annoying because generally on Linux in the past it was established that prefs would be under Edit -> Preferences for almost all applications, especially GTK applications. Nowadays with GTK4 I don't believe that is the case but I don't like modern GNOME or GTK so I am unsure about this.
Even if you were to move the preferences menu location to match between Windows and Linux, I don't think you should move it for Mac because on MacOS the standard location for editing preferences on Mac is under "Application Name -> Settings/Preferences/some other text". You'd probably get more support requests from Mac users if you moved it than if you left it alone.
Off-topic:
Speaking of that, thank you for reminding me that I can undo this change on Basilisk. I never thought about it until right now.

Epyrus 2.1.3 has been released | Mac/FreeBSD builds
by athenian200 » 2024-07-10, 04:22

Epyrus 2.1.3 has been released. This is a minor update to Epyrus, but a major security and platform update.
It's VERY late, but here is the stuff I know is done:
- All security and platform updates to UXP since the last release.
