maildir for Local Folders

It is possible to use maildir for any email accounts (if you change an option, and only for new accounts after changing the option).
But, is it possible to ALSO use maildir for the Local Folders? (The modern Thunderbird seems to allow this).
The option seems to be unchangeable from mbox for Local Folders at all for Epyrus.
