epyrus.org is down

Post by sb0rp » 2026-05-10, 15:44

What it says on the tin. I installed Blue95 yesterday morning and then reinstalled it last night and noticed Epyrus was gone, I assume this is why?

Pretty sure it's unrelated to anything you did. Athenian and I are working on bringing it back online ASAP.

Ha! I didn't mean to suggest I brought the servers down. I assumed the servers being down is why Blue95 didn't reinstall Epyrus. Thank's for the update!

I finished getting it back up... the website itself was easy to recover after all, but I didn't have a local copy of the binaries I uploaded last time, and had to push out a new release. It took a while because I wasn't really planning on doing one, was kind of distracted, and didn't have anything setup right... my local master was out of sync with remote, I couldn't remember from memory how to setup automatic updates, I forgot to properly update Epyrus for Python 3 changes (I had only prepared it for the hacky version and not the final version in some alt branch), etc.

So until I remember all the details... please just update manually if you want to, and in fact I'd advise testing this release before overwriting the copy you have, assuming you already have one.

Unfortunately... they're not broken.

https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.ph ... 64#p274521

Took them down again because I became aware of some licensing issues that could create accidental liability that I did not intend... I didn't clean up everything Mozilla had in there like I thought.

Is this still down? Browsing to epyrus.org shows nothing happens.

Weird, it's working for me?

Wonder why it's not showing up for some people?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Ah, it might be because you don't have SSL setup. Is there a reason for that?

Well, yeah, it was actually to save money because the add-ons site required an SSL certificate, which meant the certificate was issued to addons.epyrus.org, and I'd have to buy a second one if I wanted one for the main site. I wasn't interested in paying, so I left the main site without SSL.

Is the SSL thing non-negotiable at this point, so much so it will not even show up when using a browser like Pale Moon that still supports standard HTTP due to network-level restrictions where they won't even carry the traffic?

No, this is almost definitely something on my side, don't worry about it.

Isn't Chrome the only browser that will refuse to work http / non-securely in many situations like captive portaling? Ofc that means "most of" the modern browsers...

Using a free certificate from letsencrypt is fairly easy, even when dealing with several domains.

True, but I always heard Let's Encrypt is a pain because it has short renewal periods. Plus my website has no JavaScript and is basically just static HTML pages. There's basically nothing that needs to be encrypted...

Well *everyone* is shortening the cert lifetimes, and LE is in that pack. Very unfortunate bc it's worse than enpoopification; it's aimed at preventing small sites from being available at all.

You could look into "certbot" which pretty much automates requesting LE certificates.
