IMAP folders not syncing

Post by Octopuss » 2026-01-13, 22:57

I am new to IMAP so maybe this is not related to Epyrys - I don't know.
I use Posteo and have several folders under inbox, but Epyrus doesn't seem to be downloading new messages that end up in those other times than un startup it seems - I have just clicked on all of them individually and new messages that arrived several hours ago were instantly downloaded, but I have the account set to check for new messages every two minutes.

Am I doing anything wrong or something?

If you've set the folders to be synchronized then it should Just Work™
Maybe Posteo had a temporary issue on their side. You're dealing with server-side mail with IMAP, after all.

Setting the folders to sync is something that should be set in Epyrus?
I mean they seem to mostly sync on startup, but it feels like it's completely random afterwards. Inbox works.

I'm pretty sure it's enabled by default in Epyrus.
But you can check by right-clicking the folder, selecting properties, tab Synchronization, "Select this folder for offline use".
If checked, then it should automatically grab the contents for local storage.

Looks about righht then.

Perhaps I should check the "When checking for new messages for this account, always check this folder"?

Possibly! I don't need it for my own IMAP server but maybe Posteo needs an extra gentle boot to the arse.

How are messages getting moved from Inbox to a subfolder without Epyrus noticing? Assume Inbox is where newly arrived messages are delivered to.

Some email tools to "check for new mail" look only in Inbox; to see a different folder, that folder has to be set up as bascially a different account.

That's not how it works. Or that's not what I described?
There are filters on the server itself, and mails are sorted into folders when they arrive. Epyrus is set to check every 2 minutes, so mails are always in their folders.

What I believe I described was that sometimes, stuff that's in the folders doesn't show up in Epyrus for several hours even if I repeatedly mash the F5 button unless I click on each of the folders - then several messages might appear that were actually delivered (to the server obviously) several hours ago. Meanwhile, whatever is sent to inbox shows up immediatelly. It's just the folders. But it's also pretty random and hasn't happened since I started this thread.

Server-side filtering which has the effect of delivering mail directly to folders, not stopping at Inbox - okay that's good. Epyrus and TB-flavor clients by default (I believe) think *they* are doing the filtering not the server. So after/during scanning Inbox (with optional download for local storage), EP applies filters and moves mail from Inbox to folders. When done it can pop up the notify, and highlight/bold the folders which it knows now contain newly-filed mail. When user clicks/selects a folder, EP synchronizes that with the server - thus any updates performed behind its back, say by server filtering or by a different client, then appear in EP's view of that folder.

Under this scheme F5 / "Get New Messages for Current Account" would refresh only Inbox for the account contaning the selected folder. Even so, with background folder-scanning, for me EP eventually alerts on new mail in sub-folders in other accounts. Not sure if that actually works when mail was placed there by some agent other than EP...
