Revive Pages

Post by _yup_ » 2025-10-06, 13:47

Most of the current websites on the Internet are characterized by volatility: the contents of their pages get changed frequently, the pages get moved to another locations or even removed altogether, as well as the sites themselves get deleted. However, bookmarks remain in the browsers, and other sites and search engines still have links leading to this disappeared information, and people sometimes need to access it.

Revive Pages is an extension for Firefox (up to version 57), Seamonkey, Pale Moon, Iceape-UXP and other browsers that support extensions created using XUL overlay technology, intended to solve this task by using of dedicated Web sites (mirrors), which hold copies of other Web sites.

In order to do this, it adds to the standard browser Error page its own buttons with which you can try to open a copy of the page saved in one of these archives:

Apart that, it adds a new menu item for this operation to context menus of web pages and links on them:

Identical items it adds to context menus of the Page Source window and links in it: Image

And yet one "Revive this page..." menu item it adds to the "Tools" menu (if this is not disabled in the extension settings).

Also during browser UI customization you can drag extension button to any of browser panels: Image

By clicking on any of the above-mentioned elements you will open a window for selection of the desired archive: Image

Revive Pages is very similar to the famous Resurrect Pages extension, but have some advantages over it. Most important of them:
  1. Revive Pages works not only in main browser window, but in Page Source window too.
  2. Revive Pages dialog does not block browser, you can open it and continue browsing without necessity to open archived page immediately.
Moreover, you may keep as many opened Revive Pages dialog windows simultaneously as you wish.
The home page of Revive Pages is http://yup.lh1.in/AddOns/RevivePages/
Also I hope it will be available soon at https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/revivepages/

And many more (Archiveror, CacheIt!, Get Archive, Resurrect Pages, Web Mirror Viewer), but it's good to have a new alternative.

As for me, Resurrect Pages is (was) most powerful and flexible among all above-mentioned extensions. And Revive Pages is created after it, and partly using its sources (localization files, mainly).

The only thing that can be "borrowed" from other extensions is copying URL to clipboard, and this can be done easily. I am just not sure if it's worth doing this. Current Revive Pages options cover all possible scenarios except opening in some other browser. But usually I am trying to open target page in the current browser, and only if I see that it is not able to display it correctly, open it in another one - by using "Open in other browser" from page context menu (added via the CustomButton):

What about automatic redirections? For example, I open a bookmark which gets instantly redirected to a completely different URL. In this case clipboard is the only way, right?

You are damn right. Redirection is a problem. Part of it is solved by using extension for links on web pages. But this way requires a live page with such link.

OTOH, no one extension allows to restore URL copied to the clipboard. They do just opposite: place generated URL of an archived page to the clipboard.

And no one extension deals with bookmarks.

Perhaps, I will add these functions. Architecture of Revive Pages allows to do this without too much efforts.

Thanks for the publicity :)
I don't know if any of my extensions other than Pure URL are popular.

Yesterday оn https://deusrex.neocities.org I discovered PermissionsPlus and decided that I definitely need it - after some small enhancement.

As I'm not registered on Gitlab, I placed this enhanced version here: https://repo.palemoon.org/yup/permissionsplus

More detailed description will be in the PermissionsPlus support topic.

Version 2.0 is released.

Now it operates on bookmarks and history records, and also can get an URL for reviving from clipboard, and paste a resulting URL to it instead of page opening:

Version 2.1: Automatic closing of the extension window can be disabled in the extension preferences.
