Is there any kind of popup, notification, etc. taking focus off the page when you get the blank matrix? I see that or something similar when the cookie notifications popup.

Unfortunately I won't be able to access my e-mail inbox for a while, so communication has to go through here for the time being...
Can you check the various consoles (browser console, error console, etc.) for messages when you open the popup?

If it's about the toolbar button disappearing, that's a known an probably unfixable bug.

My workaround is to quickly disable/enable the extension, when it reinitializes, the button returns. Same problem happens with uBO as well, the only other restartless extension with a toolbar button that I use.

I am just getting back to this, it is still a problem.
The button is not 'disappearing' the drop down when clicked just is blank usually after the first time on a site.
As for disabling and re-enabling the addon the web page must be reloaded to get nMatrix to display anything but a grey box as an icon or get more than blank list.

This is happening inconsistently, it seems when I want it to happen to get a screen shot it is evading me

Now for a work around I need to ask the following:
When the icon is greyed out is nMatrix still functional?
When I am reloading a page am I still protected?

I see what's the problem. For some reasons it doesn't detect any request, so the UI disables itself. Sometimes this happen when you are too fast to open the dropdown, other times it's more subtle and hard to track.
As for protection, it should still work, but if you see something strange please do report.
Reloading the page is the correct solution here.
