Talkemount.com page blank

Post by Thad E G » 2026-07-25, 18:47

Have been visiting this Sony e-mount-camera site for years. Now, in Palemoon, I am only seeing blank page.

Could it have gone chrome-only? I don't think there has been any change or active development on the site for a long time

It's displaying fine in Helium

palemoon "debugger" says

Code: Select all

Error loading this URL: Could not load the source for https://www.talkemount.com/.

Talkemount.com is loading fine for me in both Pale Moon and Basilisk. Here it is with a clean profile in Pale Moon:

Have you tried it with a temporary clean new profile to see if there are extensions or preferences you are using that are causing an issue?

The Talkemount site is rendering properly for me.

At the time of this posting I am using 64 bit linux (GTK3) Pale Moon 34.3.1 running in 64 bit MX Linux 25.2 (Infinity) Xfce with uBlock Origin 1.16.6.1 enabled for the site and hardware acceleration turned off.

In the thread I linked to, you two were also the only ones able to view that site. Are you using a Linux distro as well andyprough? Or based in the US?

Yes on both counts. MX Linux 25.2.

But in that thread you linked to, I got an error with Pale Moon on the mtbr.com website, it was with Basilisk that I was getting the web page to render correctly: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.ph ... 29#p276629

So it wasn't a regional or OS issue on mtbr.com, it was a difference between Pale Moon and Basilisk.

But I see what you mean on this talkemount.com website - if I use a VPN with Pale Moon with a location in Switzerland, England, Canada, Mexico, Israel, it loads as a blank page also. But with Israel and England if I try them on Mullvad Browser they load just fine, while Mexico and Canada give me a 409 Conflict error. So maybe some regional + browser UA sniffing issues going on here possibly? Seems pretty odd.

FWIW it loads fine for me with Basilisk/Windows/Australia.

Can confirm. Changed my (obscure and unknown) VPN from SE to US, and it worked. UK worked as well. NO, FI, DK and DE did not.

Off-topic:
Before I head on out to go down to catch some waves for surfing at Quintana Beach on the upper Texas coast this morning, I thought I would check on here to read a few of the comments made during the night where I live.
The original poster (Thad E G) cannot reach the site and he is using the linux distro which is Linux Mint 22.2 and this distro is also one version behind since Mint is now at (22.3). The poster is also one Pale Moon version behind at (34.3.0).

I made my first post where I showed the site using the 64 bit MX Linux 25.2 distro. This post will show the same page again and I am typing this post still using 64 bit (GTK3) linux Pale Moon (34.3.1). But the only difference now, I am using my backup SSD which is installed with the 64 bit Debian 13.6 (Trixie) Xfce linux distro.

Since both screenshots show the exact same page, my Panels (Taskbar in Windows) in both MX Linux and Debian are different from one another.

I get this response: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.ph ... 11#p276622
I am seeing this too for talkemount.com. I can load and view mtbr.com

palemoon --safe-mode: Same result.

I have not updated palemoon for a while. I doubt very much if any changes have been made to talkemount: it is one of those enthusiast sites that gets bought up by some organisation promising new development and support and which is then ignored indefinitely by its new owners. That was a few years ago.

I can view the site in helium

I'm sticking with Mint 22.2, which is still supported. I'll check out 22.3 at sometime, but prefer to stick with "nothing's changed everything works." Which it does, except for the sudden change with this one site in pale moon.

I will update pale moon. Thanks for the nudge. I'm using the MX .deb filesand have had no problems with that.

If you update Pale Moon, you might want to hold off for the next nine days, give or take a day or two. The reason being, Pale Moon will update to version (34.3.2).

I don't recommend that unless you are having specific issues with the point release that are otherwise solved in an upcoming release.
Also, Night Wing: the link is to a restricted board that not everyone has access to. It's not really useful to post.

OK, will postpone pm upgrade.

But I'd be very surprised if it made a difference, because talkemount has always been accessible with this and previous versions, and, due to ownership neglect, I'm sure nothing is being changed there.

1. We've already told you that this website is now inaccessible with other browsers also, depending on what country you try to access it from. Something going on with the site, with geofencing and user agent sniffing somehow or other it seems. I can't think of anything internal to Pale Moon that would make a site accessible in one country and not in another, so I assume it must be something the site itself has begun doing.
2. As you were just told, putting off updating your version isn't a great idea.

It responds with an HTTP 406 (Not Acceptable) for me. No content is transferred to the browser.
If I change the useragent string to a spoofed Firefox 115 on Linux, it sends me a 202 response (Accepted) and throws a proof-of-work challenge at me which fails.
If I change it to a non-Firefox compat UA string on Linux (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux) Goanna/6.4 PaleMoon/34.3.1), it passes without challenge.

So, this is entirely a UA sniffing deliberate block, which you can bypass with e.g. Sasuga or by manually entering general.useragent.override.talkemount.com with the UA string of choice.

Maybe, perhaps, possibly. There are a number of sites that ban with a broad brush. I am in India: we are sometimes unwelcome. Thus I would consider it likely except...
I assume it must be something the site itself has begun doing.
I don't think that the owners of the site have even looked at it for several years. And anyway, I can access it with another browser: doesn't that rule out the geo-filtering thing?
2. As you were just told, putting off updating your version isn't a great idea.
As I was just told... putting it off for nine days would be a good idea. And my current version is hardly old.

I like to keep Pale moon up to date.
I do not like to change Linux versions, although I do apply updates, including new kernels regularly. Mine is not a neglected system.
Moonchild wrote:So, this is entirely a UA sniffing deliberate block, which you can bypass with e.g. Sasuga or by manually entering general.useragent.override.talkemount.com with the UA string of choice.
OK, thanks. However unlikely it may see me that that changed... Well... Lots of things seem unlikely to me so that isn't saying much. And that is the way I must go. And will.

Update

Works perfectly. Looks like it wasn't geo-sniffing. Also looks like my certainty that nothing had changed was imperfect.

Hey ho, never good to be too certain.

Thanks again @Moonchild. The internet would not feel like home to me without Pale Moon
